The United States Air Force (USAF) announced that it has deployed four B-1B Lancer strategic bombers from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, to Japan. The deployment is part of the Bomber Task Force (BTF) mission conducted by the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command and supports its forward deployment strategy in the Indo-Pacific region.
These bombers are scheduled to participate in air exercises and joint training missions over the next few days, strengthening U.S. regional deterrence and cooperation with allies. This marks the second time B-1Bs have been deployed to Japan this year, with aircraft from the 9th Expeditionary Bomber Squadron operating from Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture for approximately one month in April. At the time, they conducted joint training with Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets to enhance bilateral operational capabilities and interoperability.
The U.S. Air Force has not disclosed the duration or specific activities of this deployment, but a typical BTF deployment includes aerial refueling training, joint exercises with allies, and rapid response training to demonstrate the global operational and deterrent capabilities of American strategic bombers.
According to publicly available intelligence (OSINT), Japan is planning a large-scale exercise in the coming weeks from the Sea of Japan to the waters near Taiwan, with the participation of the United States and Australia, and the deployment of the B-1B is likely part of preparations for weapons and personnel for the multinational exercise.
According to statistics, the U.S. Air Force will deploy strategic bombers around the world approximately 48 times between mid-2024 and 2025. Last year alone, 33 missions were conducted, 10 of which were in the Indo-Pacific region, 10 in Europe, and 10 in the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of responsibility. This highlights the global and continuous nature of the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command’s activities.
The deployment of the B-1B reaffirms the strengthening of regional security and cooperation and is seen as a new milestone in defense cooperation between the United States and Japan.
