Prishtina, 17 November 2025 – Kosovo Police reported on 16 November that they had arrested four individuals for illegally crossing the border from Serbia into Kosovo while armed. The arrests come amid a flurry of media reports from Serbia alleging that a group of Albanians fired at Serbian military personnel in the border area, though Kosovo authorities have denied these claims.
According to the Kosovo Police, the four individuals, who were identified as Serbian nationals, were apprehended during routine border patrols near the village of Zarbince, situated close to the contested Kosovo-Serbia border. The suspects, who were armed, were detained for illegal border crossing and possession of weapons, and their firearms and ammunition were subsequently confiscated. The suspects were placed in detention in accordance with the legal procedures of Kosovo.
The arrests came on the heels of reports from Serbian media outlets, including Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) and newspapers like Blic and Večernje Novosti, which claimed that an armed group of Albanians had opened fire on Serbian military forces near the Debela Glava base, located in the municipality of Bujanovac. These reports suggested that the armed group, traveling in six SUVs, fired at Serbian army personnel, hitting a dog that was accompanying the patrol. The group allegedly fled toward Kosovo’s territory after the incident.
However, the Kosovo Police firmly rejected these reports, calling them “disinformation.” In a statement issued to the press, the Kosovo authorities denied any incident involving gunfire directed at Serbian soldiers, stating, “These claims are unfounded and do not correspond to any official information or events verified by the authorities in the territory of the Republic of Kosovo.” The police further assured the public that no such incident had been recorded by their units, and that the situation in the border area remained calm and fully under control.
Kosovo Police emphasized that the publication of such false reports was a source of unnecessary tension, particularly in the volatile border regions, which have long been a flashpoint in the aftermath of Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia. Kosovo has experienced sporadic tensions with Serbia, and any rumors or misinformation can exacerbate existing frictions.
The arrest of the Serbian hunters is not the first time Kosovo’s border area has been the subject of tensions and disputes. While Kosovo is internationally recognized by many countries as an independent state, Serbia, supported by its allies in Russia and China, continues to regard Kosovo as a breakaway province. The region’s border areas are often heavily patrolled, and incidents involving armed individuals crossing into Kosovo are not uncommon.
Kosovo Police’s denial of the Serbian media’s claims was aimed at quelling rising concerns over possible escalation. “The Kosovo Police assures citizens and public opinion that the situation in the border area has been and continues to remain calm and fully under the control of the authorities,” the statement read.
This latest development underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding Kosovo’s border security, especially in areas close to Serbia, where ethnic tensions between Albanians and Serbs remain high. Kosovo and Serbia are still engaged in dialogue mediated by the European Union to normalize relations, but incidents such as these highlight the delicate nature of security in the region.
As Kosovo and Serbia continue to grapple with their complex political relationship, incidents along the border, whether involving armed individuals or media misinformation, only serve to heighten tensions.
