Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, has been elected president of the Lisbon Metropolitan Council in a vote held this Thursday at the headquarters of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The leadership team also includes Paulo Ferreira, mayor of Vila Franca de Xira, and Ana Teresa Vicente, mayor of Palmela, who will serve as vice presidents.
All eighteen municipalities that form the Lisbon Metropolitan Area participated in the vote, which was conducted through a secret and weighted ballot. The single list presented received strong approval with sixteen votes in favor and no votes against or null.
The newly elected leadership will serve during the 2025–2029 term, taking responsibility for guiding policies and coordination efforts across the metropolitan region.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Council acts as the decision-making body of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, according to the statutes governing intermunicipal entities. It is composed of the presidents of the municipal councils of all eighteen member municipalities, including Alcochete, Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Cascais, Lisbon, Loures, Mafra, Moita, Montijo, Odivelas, Oeiras, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sintra, and Vila Franca de Xira.
