HOMS, Syria — The Syrian transitional government has issued a sharp condemnation following a lethal bomb explosion that targeted the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the city of Homs during Friday prayers. The attack, which struck in the heart of the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood, has left at least eight people dead and 18 others injured, marking a significant security breach for the fledgling administration.
The Attack
The explosion occurred as worshippers gathered for the weekly Friday sermon at the mosque located on Al-Khodari Street. According to Nour al-Din al-Baba, spokesperson for the Syrian Interior Ministry, the blast was caused by an explosive device placed inside the building by a “criminal terrorist.”
While emergency services rushed to the scene to transport the wounded to local hospitals, the neighborhood remained cordoned off as investigators searched for clues. Al-Baba noted that the perpetrator’s identity has not yet been established, but characterized the event as a deliberate attempt to derail the country’s current path toward stability.
Government Response
In a formal statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced the bombing as a “cowardly act” and a “blatant assault on human and moral values.” The ministry framed the escalation as a desperate attempt by external or remnant forces to undermine the resilience of the Syrian people.
Key highlights from the government’s response include:
-
Commitment to Counter-Terrorism: The administration vowed to continue combating terrorism in all forms.
-
Call for Global Solidarity: Damascus urged the international community to stand against terrorism and support Syria’s efforts to safeguard its citizens.
-
Focus on Security: The Interior Ministry emphasized that recent “preventive missions” had been successful but warned that remnants of the former regime and extremist groups remain a threat.
Responsibility and Context
A group calling itself “Saraya Ansar al-Sunna” reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack via the state-run Alikhbaria TV channel. Analysts suggest that such attacks aim to exploit the vulnerabilities of the transitional phase following the collapse of the Ba’ath Party regime.
The bombing comes at a sensitive time for the transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which was formed in January 2025 after former leader Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia. The new government has been working to consolidate control and pursue those accused of stirring unrest, including ISIS (Daesh) and elements associated with the previous government.
