Engineering Marvel in the Sahara: CRCC Completes Track-Laying on Africa’s Longest Heavy-Haul Railway Bridge

TINDOUF, ALGERIA — China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) announced a major milestone in North African infrastructure this week with the completion of track-laying on the PK330 Bridge. Spanning 6 kilometers across the shifting sands of the Sahara, the structure now stands as the longest heavy-haul railway bridge on the African continent.

The bridge represents the most technically demanding segment of the 575-kilometer Western Mining Railway, a massive undertaking designed to unlock the economic potential of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit—one of the largest untapped mineral reserves in the world.

Overcoming the “Shifting Sands” of the Sahara

Located approximately 1,250 kilometers southwest of Algiers in the Tindouf province, the construction team faced some of the harshest environmental conditions on Earth. To ensure the structural integrity of the PK330 Bridge, engineers had to innovate:

• Nighttime Operations: Due to extreme daytime heat that could compromise the curing process, concrete was primarily poured at night.

• Thermal Management: Specialized cooling techniques were employed to prevent cracking in the desert’s high-temperature environment.

• Environmental Resistance: The bridge was specifically engineered to withstand frequent sandstorms and the unstable, shifting sand and gravel terrain of the region.

Economic Impact and Local Empowerment

The Western Mining Railway is a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aimed at creating a seamless logistical corridor between Algeria’s mining heartland, industrial zones, and Mediterranean ports.

The project has already delivered significant socio-economic benefits to the region:

• Job Creation: More than 7,000 local jobs have been generated during the construction phase.
