In the fast-paced, high-stakes world of modern football, referees are often the most criticized figures on the pitch. Yet, one man transcended the role, earning a level of respect and a touch of fear that no official has matched since. Pierluigi Collina wasn’t just a referee; he was a global icon of the beautiful game.

Long before high-definition cameras and video assistants were introduced to the sport, fans used to joke that Collina had “VAR in his eyes.” His intense, piercing blue gaze (the result of alopecia) became his trademark, but it was his unparalleled positioning and decision-making that set him apart.

Collina’s authority didn’t just come from his appearance; it came from his meticulous preparation. He was a pioneer in “scouting” before the whistle blew.

  • Multilingual Mastery: He could communicate fluently in four languages: Italian, Spanish, French, and English, ensuring he could manage international stars in their native tongue.

  • Homework: Before every match, Collina would study the tactics and individual players of both teams. He famously learned the names of every player on the pitch to build personal rapport and maintain control.

The pinnacle of any referee’s career is the FIFA World Cup Final. In 2002, when Brazil faced Germany in Yokohama, Collina delivered a masterclass.

At the end of the match, in a rare display of reverence, the legendary Ronaldo Nazário approached Collina to gift him his match-worn shirt and the game ball. It remains one of the most poignant images in sports history, the world’s best player honoring the world’s best official. Both the Brazilian and German squads sought him out after the final whistle to congratulate him on a flawless performance.

Collina’s fame was so great that it broke the boundaries of the pitch. To this day, he remains the only referee to ever grace the cover of a major video game, appearing on the jacket of Pro Evolution Soccer 3 alongside superstars like Francesco Totti.

While he was charismatic, he was also ruthless with his cards. He took no nonsense from even the biggest egos in the sport. Players didn’t just respect him; they feared him. His presence alone was often enough to de-escalate a heated confrontation before he even reached for his pocket.

Collina proved that a referee could be as much of a star as the strikers they managed. He retired from the field as a six-time “World’s Best Referee of the Year” winner, leaving behind a legacy that defines the standard for officiating in the 21st century.
