SUVA, FIJI – In a strategic move to bolster the future of rugby in the province, the Tailevu Rugby Football Union (TRFU) has announced a significant new partnership with retail giant Jacks of Fiji. The collaboration, finalized on Wednesday, is set to provide a vital lifeline for grassroots development and youth empowerment programs throughout the region.
TRFU President Joseph Rodan Snr emphasized that the deal transcends mere financial backing, focusing instead on shared community values and the long-term sustainability of the sport. “This partnership reflects a deep commitment to our young athletes,” Rodan stated. “Tailevu Rugby places a strong emphasis on grassroots development, player welfare, and the growth of our players both on and off the field.”
The union, which boasts more than 35 village-based teams, has become a prolific talent pipeline for international rugby, having already produced 67 players currently competing in professional leagues overseas. The new funding is expected to refine this pathway, offering more structured training and professional opportunities for players aged 18 to 23.
Under its current five-year strategic plan, the TRFU has set ambitious performance targets for the 2026 season, including a sweep of Fiji’s major domestic trophies: the Skipper Cup and the Farebrother Trophy. To achieve this, the union has leveraged a growing digital presence to increase transparency and attract commercial interest, positioning Tailevu as a modern, professional entity within the Fijian rugby landscape.
The announcement comes at a pivotal time for the sport in Fiji, following a similar partnership between the Naitasiri Rugby Union and Jacks of Fiji. Together, these initiatives signal a broader trend of private-sector investment in provincial rugby, ensuring that the next generation of “homegrown stars” has a clear, supported route to the national stage and beyond.
