KYIV – A massive technical malfunction within Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Saturday morning has triggered a cascading power failure, leaving millions without electricity across Ukraine and causing a total blackout in neighboring Moldova.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:42 a.m. local time, involved a simultaneous disconnection of high-voltage power lines linking the Romanian and Moldovan power systems. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that the failure originated from a technical disruption in the lines connecting the western and central parts of the country, which subsequently forced the automatic protection systems at several substations to trigger.

In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, the effects were immediate. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the city’s metro system was forced to suspend services due to low voltage, while water supplies were interrupted in several districts. Emergency crews have been deployed to restore critical infrastructure, but authorities warn that the stabilization of the grid may take time as technicians work to re-engage nuclear power plant units that were automatically unloaded during the surge.
The impact crossed international borders instantly. Moldova’s Energy Minister, Dorin Junghietu, announced that the loss of transmission lines on Ukrainian territory led to a widespread blackout across the country, including the capital, Chisinau. Traffic at several border crossings between the two nations was also suspended due to the lack of electricity for processing systems.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that all necessary response measures have been activated. While the cause is currently being cited as a “technological failure,” the incident highlights the extreme fragility of the region’s energy network following years of intense pressure and strategic strikes on infrastructure.
Emergency services in both nations remain on high alert as they navigate one of the most significant grid failures of the winter season.
