MONACO – Since he acceded to the throne in 2005, Prince Albert II has transformed the Principality into a global powerhouse for environmental advocacy. From the icy expanses of the poles to the depths of the Mediterranean, the Sovereign’s 20-year commitment has culminated in a series of landmark initiatives that combine high-level diplomacy with concrete scientific action.

According to a special report by the Monaco Tribune, here are the ten defining actions of his reign:

Historical Polar Expeditions

Prince Albert II made history as the first Head of State to reach both poles. In 2006, he traveled by dog sled to the North Pole, followed by an expedition to the South Pole in 2009. These journeys were not merely symbolic but served to witness and document the direct impact of climate change on the cryosphere.

Creation of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (PA2F)

Established in June 2006, the foundation has become one of the most influential environmental NGOs in the world. To date, it has:

  • Funded over 750 projects.

  • Committed more than €101 million across eleven international branches.

  • Focused on three key regions: the Mediterranean, the Polar regions, and the Least Developed Countries.

International Forum on Energy Security

Launched in 2016, this forum promotes renewable energy and European cooperation on energy security. Prince Albert II has used this platform to advocate for a transition away from fossil fuels toward a decarbonized future.

The Forests and Communities Initiative (FCI)

Launched in May 2022, the FCI protects vital forest ecosystems by empowering indigenous peoples and local communities. It currently operates across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

 Presidency of the Pelagos Agreement

In November 2025, Monaco took over the rotating presidency of the Pelagos Sanctuary, a massive marine area dedicated to protecting marine mammals. The Prince has focused his term on reducing maritime noise pollution and preventing collisions between ships and whales.

 “Mediterranean 30×30” Commitment

Following the COP15 Kunming-Montreal Agreement, the Prince has championed the goal of protecting 30% of the Mediterranean by 2030. Currently, only about 1.5% of the basin is under effective management, a gap he aims to close through the “Missions Méditerranée” program.

 “Because the Ocean” Declaration

At COP21 in 2015, the Prince signed this historic declaration, which successfully integrated ocean issues into the global climate change agenda. Monaco also co-founded the MedFund, which supports over 20 marine protected areas.

Ratification of the BBNJ (High Seas) Treaty

On May 9, 2024, Monaco became the first European state to ratify the BBNJ Agreement. The treaty, which officially came into force on January 17, 2026, allows for the creation of marine protected areas in international waters beyond national jurisdictions.

 Blue Economy and Finance Forum

The 2025 forum brought together nearly 100 countries and identified over €25 billion in potential investments for a sustainable blue economy. The Prince announced that the 2026 edition will be held this May in Monaco to further scale blue finance.

The World’s First Glacier Archive Sanctuary

In January 2026, the Ice Memory Foundation (supported by the PA2F) inaugurated a glacier archive at the Concordia Station in Antarctica. This “natural safe” stores ice cores from threatened glaciers at -52°C, preserving a climatic history for future generations of scientists.
