Final General Classification
The top five riders in the 2026 Ruta del Sol were:
- Iván Romeo (Spain)
- Andreas Leknessund (Norway) +0:07
- Tom Pidcock (Great Britain) +0:27
- Jan Christen (Switzerland) +0:44
- Romain Grégoire (France) Same Time
Romeo’s decisive attack on Stage 2 proved the winning move, allowing him to defend the yellow jersey for the remainder of the race.
Stage 1 – Laporte claims the opening victory
The race began with a demanding 150.1-kilometre mountain stage from Benahavís to Pizarra.
Despite several climbs throughout the day, the peloton regrouped before the finish, allowing Christophe Laporte to showcase his sprinting strength.
The Frenchman powered to victory and earned the first leader’s jersey of the week.
Stage 2 – Romeo attacks into the lead
The decisive moment of the race arrived during the 138.6-kilometre stage from Torrox to Otura.
Iván Romeo launched a long-range attack alongside Andreas Leknessund on one of the day’s major climbs.
The pair steadily increased their advantage over the peloton before Romeo accelerated again inside the final two kilometres, dropping the Norwegian and riding solo to the stage victory.
The performance earned him both the stage win and the overall race lead.
Stage 3 – Fretin wins uphill sprint
The third stage travelled 180.9 kilometres from Jaén to Lopera, ending with a punchy uphill finish.
Belgian rider Milan Fretin produced the strongest sprint to defeat Paul Penhoët and Christophe Laporte.
While the stage victory went elsewhere, Romeo safely defended the leader’s jersey, maintaining control of the general classification.
Stage 4 – Crabbe triumphs in Pozoblanco
The race’s only predominantly flat stage covered 166 kilometres between Montoro and Pozoblanco.
Twenty-year-old Belgian Tom Crabbe sprinted to an impressive victory, holding off Søren Wærenskjold and Sandy Dujardin.
Once again, the general classification remained unchanged as Romeo comfortably retained the race lead.
Stage 5 – Pidcock wins finale
The final stage from La Roda de Andalucía to Lucena offered one last opportunity for attacks.
On the final climb, Tom Pidcock accelerated decisively, distancing every remaining rival.
The British rider extended his advantage on the descent before crossing the finish line alone to secure the stage victory.
Behind him, Iván Romeo finished safely with the other general classification contenders, sealing the biggest stage-race success of his career.
Romeo controls the race
Although the race featured victories by five different riders, Romeo remained the central figure throughout the week.
His perfectly judged attack on Stage 2 gave him an advantage that no rival could overturn.
The Spanish champion demonstrated impressive maturity, responding calmly to every challenge while avoiding unnecessary risks during the remaining stages.
His consistency proved just as important as his climbing strength.
Pidcock and Leknessund complete strong weeks
Second-place finisher Andreas Leknessund remained Romeo’s closest challenger throughout the race after following his decisive attack on Stage 2.
Although unable to match the Spaniard in the closing kilometres, the Norwegian secured another important podium finish.
Tom Pidcock finished strongly with his spectacular solo victory on the final day, climbing onto the overall podium after an aggressive week of racing.
Andalucía delivers another demanding route
The Ruta del Sol once again offered one of the most varied routes of the early European season.
The organisers combined:
- Two demanding mountain stages.
- Two rolling stages suited to puncheurs.
- One flat sprint stage.
The terrain encouraged attacking racing from the opening day while rewarding riders capable of climbing, descending and handling constantly changing profiles.
An important victory for Spanish cycling
Romeo’s triumph marks another significant success for Spanish cycling and confirms his growing reputation as one of the sport’s most promising young stage racers.
Winning one of Spain’s most prestigious early-season races against an international field provides a major confidence boost ahead of the spring classics and Grand Tours.
With victories from Christophe Laporte, Iván Romeo, Milan Fretin, Tom Crabbe and Tom Pidcock, the 2026 Ruta del Sol delivered exciting racing across Andalucía and once again lived up to its reputation as one of the highlights of the early cycling calendar.
