JACKSON, Miss. – A sophisticated ransomware attack has brought the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) to a virtual standstill, forcing the closure of all 35 of its clinics statewide and leaving thousands of patients in a state of medical limbo.
The assault, which began early Thursday morning, has crippled the institution’s digital infrastructure, including its electronic health record platform and internal communication systems. As the state’s only academic medical center and a primary provider for specialized care, the outage has sent shockwaves through Mississippi’s healthcare landscape.

Care by Pen and Paper
With the “Epic” electronic records system offline, doctors and nurses at the Jackson-based hospital have been forced to revert to manual documentation. “Some of us have been here long enough that we remember taking care of patients with pen and paper,” Vice Chancellor LouAnn Woodward remarked during a press conference. “To use a medical phrase—we have stopped the bleeding, but the scope of the intrusion is still not fully understood.”
While emergency rooms and inpatient wards remain operational through these “downtime procedures,” the impact on outpatient services has been devastating. Elective surgeries have been indefinitely postponed, and critical treatments, including chemotherapy for cancer patients, have been disrupted.

A Growing Epidemic
The crisis at UMMC highlights the escalating vulnerability of the American healthcare sector to cyber-extortion. Industry experts note that hospitals are prime targets for ransomware because the life-or-death nature of their operations creates immense pressure to pay demands quickly.
For now, the medical center’s website remains offline, and officials have not provided a timeline for when digital services will be restored. “The bad guys won’t keep us down,” Woodward told reporters, “but we will conduct thorough risk assessments before bringing anything back online.”
