WASHINGTON D.C. — In a dramatic escalation of the “AI Culture War,” President Donald Trump has issued a sweeping directive ordering all federal agencies to immediately terminate their use of technology from Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI firm.

The move follows a week of explosive, public negotiations between Anthropic and the Department of Defense (DoD), which the President dubbed the “Department of War” in his Friday afternoon announcement. The impasse centered on the company’s refusal to remove safety “guardrails” that prevent its AI model, Claude, from being used in lethal autonomous weapons systems or for domestic mass surveillance.

The 5:01 PM Deadline

The directive was announced via Truth Social just an hour before a 5:01 PM ET deadline set by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The Pentagon had demanded that Anthropic provide unrestricted access to its models for “any lawful purpose,” a demand that CEO Dario Amodei stated the company could not “in good conscience” meet.

“The Left-wing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War,” Trump wrote. “They want to force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!”

A “Supply Chain Risk”

Secretary Hegseth took the administration’s retaliation a step further, officially designating Anthropic as a “Supply Chain Risk to National Security.” This branding, typically reserved for foreign adversaries like Huawei, effectively blacklists the company from working with any primary or secondary U.S. military contractors.

The General Services Administration (GSA) acted instantly on the President’s orders, removing Anthropic from the USAi.gov evaluation suite and the federal procurement schedule—a system that handled over $50 billion in sales last year.

Impact and the “Woke AI” Executive Order

The ban marks the first major enforcement of the administration’s “Preventing Woke AI in the Federal Government” executive order, signed in July 2025. Trump’s allies argue that Anthropic’s safety protocols are a form of “Silicon Valley censorship” that hampers military efficiency.

Industry experts warn the move could have significant ripples:

  • The 6-Month Phase-Out: While most agencies must stop use immediately, the Pentagon has been granted a six-month window to strip Claude from its embedded systems.

  • Winner and Losers: Analysts suggest the ban will directly benefit competitors like Elon Musk’s Grok, which the Pentagon plans to integrate into classified networks, while serving as a warning to OpenAI and Google.

  • Economic Fallout: The decision threatens up to $200 million in existing government contracts and could jeopardize Anthropic’s rumored 2026 Initial Public Offering (IPO).

As the administration threatens “major civil and criminal consequences” for non-compliance during the phase-out, the divide between the White House and the “safety-first” faction of Silicon Valley has never been wider.
