MILAN — A catastrophic tram derailment has left at least two people dead and nearly 50 others injured in the heart of Milan’s financial district. The incident, which occurred during the peak of Milan Fashion Week and just after the conclusion of the 2026 Winter Olympics, has stunned the city and raised urgent questions about public transit safety.

The derailment took place on the central Vittorio Veneto avenue on Friday afternoon. According to witness reports and CCTV footage, the Number 9 tram was traveling at high speed when it suddenly swerved at a switch track, flipped nearly onto its side, and plowed into the facade of a building.

The Human Toll

Emergency responders, including dozens of ambulances and fire engines, rushed to the scene to find a site of utter devastation. Milan Mayor Beppe Sala confirmed the fatalities, identifying one victim as a passenger on the tram and the other as a pedestrian who was struck on the street as the vehicle veered off its tracks.

  • Casualty Count: At least two confirmed dead; 49 others injured.

  • Critical Care: While most sustained minor injuries, several passengers were treated for serious trauma. One person is reportedly in critical condition.

  • Rescue Efforts: Firefighters spent over an hour cutting through the wreckage of the brand-new “Tramlink” vehicle to reach survivors trapped in the front carriage.

“Human Error” Under Scrutiny

While the exact cause remains under investigation by the Milan Public Prosecutor’s office, Mayor Sala suggested that initial evidence points toward human error. The driver, described as a seasoned employee with years of experience, had reportedly only been on shift for an hour when the crash occurred.

Investigators are focusing on reports that the driver failed to properly navigate the switch track and may have skipped a scheduled stop just before the derailment. The driver is currently being treated in the hospital and is expected to be questioned by authorities as soon as his condition stabilizes.

A Brand-New Fleet in Question

The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over Milan’s recent transit upgrades. The tram involved was one of the city’s newly commissioned “Tramlink” vehicles, manufactured by Stadler Valencia. Part of a €190 million investment, these vehicles entered service only one week before the accident.

“We are deeply shaken by this very serious accident,” stated ATM, Milan’s public transport operator. “We are cooperating fully with prosecutors to establish the precise dynamic of this event.”

As the city pivots from the celebration of the Winter Olympics to mourning, a temporary memorial of flowers and candles has already begun to grow at the corner of Vittorio Veneto, a somber reminder of a Friday afternoon that turned fatal in an instant.
