JERUSALEM — In a move that signals a shift from tactical warfare to a policy of systemic decapitation, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a chilling warning on Wednesday: any successor chosen to replace the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be an “unequivocal target for elimination.”
The declaration follows the death of Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 during the initial joint U.S.-Israeli strikes of Operation Lion’s Roar (known to U.S. forces as Operation Epic Fury). As Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts scrambles to fill the ultimate seat of power, Israel has made it clear that the position itself now carries a death sentence.
“It does not matter what his name is or the place where he hides,” Katz stated in a post on X. “Any leader appointed by the Iranian terror regime to continue leading the plan to destroy Israel, threaten the U.S. and the free world… will be a target for elimination.”

Succession Under Fire
The warning comes as reports emerge that the Assembly of Experts is under immense pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the late leader. While Mojtaba has long been a shadow powerbroker, his potential elevation is viewed by Israeli intelligence as a signal of continued hardline aggression.
On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted a building in the holy city of Qom where clerics were expected to meet for succession deliberations. Though Iranian state media claimed the building was empty, the strike underscored Israel’s intent to physically disrupt the reconstitution of the regime’s leadership.
Five Days of “Epic Fury”
As the war enters its fifth day, the humanitarian and military toll continues to mount:
