WASHINGTON — In a startling development that has raised questions about military neutrality and religious overtones in the current conflict, a prominent U.S. watchdog reports that American service members are being told by commanders that the ongoing war with Iran is intended to fulfill biblical prophecy.
According to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), more than 200 complaints have been lodged by service members across 50 military units since the start of Operation Epic Fury on Saturday. The reports suggest that some commanders are framing the military campaign as a precursor to “Armageddon” and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
‘Anointed to Light the Signal Fire’
In one specific complaint cited by the MRFF, a non-commissioned officer described a combat readiness briefing where a commander urged troops not to be afraid because the operations were “all part of God’s divine plan.”
The officer, who wrote on behalf of 15 unit members, alleged that the commander specifically referenced the Book of Revelation. The commander reportedly told the unit that President Donald Trump “has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon.”
“What he did this morning was so toxic and over the line that it shocked many of us in attendance,” the officer stated, adding that the unit included Christians, a Jewish member, and a Muslim member.

Whipsawing Objectives
The reports of religious rhetoric come as the White House’s stated goals for the war continue to shift. While President Trump initially told The Washington Post that the mission was to bring “freedom” to the Iranian people, a nod toward regime change, official Pentagon objectives have focused on the total elimination of Iran’s ballistic missile program, its navy, and its regional proxy network.
However, the introduction of apocalyptic rhetoric within the ranks has sparked concern among advocacy groups. Critics argue that such framing destroys the “good order and morale” essential to military lethality and violates the religious freedoms of service members.
A Region on the Brink
As the religious controversy stirs in Washington, the reality on the ground remains grim. The U.S. has confirmed that over 9,000 Americans have already been evacuated from the Middle East as the crisis escalates. Meanwhile, top diplomats from the ASEAN nations have expressed “serious concern” over the rapid escalation, urging all parties to respect the UN Charter.
With Israel warning that it will target any newly appointed Iranian Supreme Leader and U.S. troops reportedly being briefed on “divine” missions, the fourth day of the war marks a move into increasingly unpredictable territory.
