KARPATHOS, Greece — In a significant bolstering of its southeastern defenses, the Greek Ministry of National Defense has deployed a Patriot missile battery to the island of Karpathos. The move comes as a direct response to a rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and a series of alarming drone incidents near sovereign European territory.
The deployment was authorized by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias following two separate drone attacks targeting the British sovereign base area at Akrotiri, Cyprus, earlier this week. The strategic placement of the U.S.-made surface-to-air missile system on Karpathos is intended to create an “aerial shield” over the Dodecanese and the Eastern Mediterranean corridor.
Military analysts point to the strategic importance of Karpathos’ airport, which Athens is actively seeking to integrate more deeply into NATO and U.S. operational planning. “The island serves as a pivotal node for regional deterrence,” a defense official noted, emphasizing that the deployment provides a critical layer of protection for both Greek airspace and the maritime routes connecting Europe to the Levant.
The activation of the Patriot battery coincides with a broader mobilization of Greek military assets. Under the “Joint Defense Doctrine” between Athens and Nicosia, Greece has also dispatched the state-of-the-art frigate Kimon, the first of its new FDI “Belharra” class, and the frigate Psara to Cypriot waters. The Psara is notably equipped with the “Kentavros” electronic warfare system, a Greek-developed anti-drone technology designed to neutralize unmanned threats through non-kinetic jamming.
“Greece will contribute in every possible way to the defense of the Republic of Cyprus,” Minister Dendias stated during a high-level coordination meeting in Nicosia.
The deployment marks a shift in Greek defense posture, prioritizing immediate regional threats over international pressure to export air defense systems elsewhere. As the conflict in the Middle East shows no signs of abating, the presence of the Patriot system on Karpathos serves as a firm signal of Athens’ resolve to safeguard its borders and support its allies in an increasingly volatile Eastern Mediterranean.
