CUPERTINO — Apple’s recent March event has completely redefined the landscape of its laptop lineup, introducing two distinct paths for consumers: the ultra-affordable, first-of-its-kind MacBook Neo and the refined, powerhouse MacBook Air M5.

As the dust settles on these major announcements, the choice between “affordable innovation” and “proven performance” has become the primary question for potential buyers. Here is how the two newest members of the Mac family stack up.

Price: A New Entry Point

The headline story is the pricing. Starting at just $599, the MacBook Neo is officially the most affordable laptop Apple has ever launched. In contrast, the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 begins at $1,099, positioning it as a premium mid-range device. For the price of one MacBook Air, a consumer could nearly purchase two Neos.

Performance: Silicon vs. Mobile

The performance gap is where the price difference becomes most apparent.

  • MacBook Air M5: Powered by the new M5 desktop-class chip, it features a 10-core CPU and 16GB of RAM as standard. It is designed for heavy multitasking, creative work, and longevity.

  • MacBook Neo: In a surprising move, the Neo utilizes the A18 Pro chip, the same silicon found in the iPhone 16 Pro. While impressive for “everyday productivity” like web browsing and video calls, its 6-core CPU and 8GB of RAM make it less suitable for high-end video editing or intensive AI tasks.

Design and Display

The MacBook Air M5 retains the iconic, razor-thin aluminum wedge design with a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display (500 nits) featuring True Tone and the P3 wide color gamut.

The MacBook Neo also uses an aluminum chassis but opts for a slightly smaller 13-inch display. To keep costs down, Apple omitted True Tone and the P3 gamut. Additionally, the Neo lacks a “notch,” resulting in thicker bezels to accommodate the webcam, giving it a more traditional, albeit slightly dated, aesthetic compared to its sleeker sibling.

Battery and Charging

Both laptops excel in portability. The Air M5 offers up to 18 hours of battery life and includes the beloved MagSafe charging port. The Neo isn’t far behind, promising up to 11 hours of web surfing, though it charges exclusively via USB-C and, notably, does not include a power brick in the box in some regions.

The Verdict

The MacBook Air M5 remains the gold standard for students and professionals who need a “do-it-all” machine that will stay fast for years. However, the MacBook Neo is the most important product of 2026 for a different reason: it brings the macOS experience to a massive new audience at a price point previously reserved for Chromebooks and iPads.
