LOS ANGELES — Residents of Southern California woke up to a startling climatic shift this Thursday as a rare and potent March heat wave began its “eruption” across the state. In a dramatic departure from typical spring conditions, temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s and triple digits through Friday, triggering urgent health warnings and threatening century-old records.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heat advisories through Friday evening for vast swaths of Southern California, focusing on coastal valleys and interior foothills.

A Rapid Surge in the South
The Inland Empire and the San Fernando Valley are bearing the brunt of the initial surge. Forecasts indicate that temperatures will run 20 to 30 degrees above seasonal norms. Compounding the daytime heat, “unusually warm” overnight lows in the upper 60s and mid-70s are expected to prevent critical cooling for foothill communities.
Experts warn that this early-season event is particularly dangerous because the human body has not yet had time to acclimate to summer-like extremes.
Desert Southwest on the Brink
The heat is not confined to the Golden State. A high-pressure ridge is pushing the mercury to historic levels across Arizona:

Phoenix: Forecasting 94°F for both Thursday and Friday. Reaching 95°F would mark the earliest date ever recorded for such a temperature in the city.

Yuma: Approaching its all-time March record of 99°F (set in 1916). If the city hits 100°F, it will be the first triple-digit reading in Arizona for 2026.
The “Heat Creep” Toward Northern California
While Northern California remains partially shielded by marine layers for now, the protection is thinning. San Jose is on track to hit 81°F today, potentially tying or breaking its daily record.
By early next week, forecast models show the high-pressure ridge shifting north, potentially pushing 90-degree heat deep into the Central Valley and Northern California—a phenomenon rarely seen this early in the calendar year.
