WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of international condemnation on Tuesday after posting an extraordinary threat to wipe out “a whole civilization” if Tehran fails to meet his 8 p.m. ET deadline to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement, issued via Truth Social, has been labeled by critics as an effective threat of genocide against a nation of 93 million people. The rhetoric marks the sharpest escalation since U.S.-Israeli military operations began in late February.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump wrote. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change… maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”

Military Escalation at Kharg Island

As the deadline approached, the threat of destruction appeared more than rhetorical. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that U.S. forces struck more than 50 military targets on Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub.

The island is a critical economic artery, handling over 90% of Iran’s oil exports. The strikes align with Trump’s previous warnings to “decimate” Iran’s energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared that “restraint is over,” warning that global energy supplies would be disrupted for years if the U.S. crosses further “red lines.”

A Chorus of Condemnation

The president’s remarks have alienated even his most steadfast allies. Nigel Farage, leader of the UK’s Reform Party and a longtime friend of Trump, described the warning as “over the top in every single way.”

Domestically, the backlash spanned the political spectrum:

  • Chuck Schumer (Senate Minority Leader): Labeled Trump an “extremely sick person” and called the conflict a “wanton war of choice.”

  • Marjorie Taylor Greene (Former Ally): Called for Trump’s removal from office, stating, “We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness.”

  • Joe Kent (Former Counterterrorism Chief): Warned that such actions would end America’s status as a global superpower and turn it into an “agent of chaos.”

Diplomatic Last Stands

Despite the bellicose rhetoric, a thin thread of diplomacy remains. The Tehran Times reported that indirect communication channels between Washington and Tehran remain open.

President Trump is reportedly weighing an 11th-hour proposal from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for a two-week ceasefire. However, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly defended the president’s stance, citing Iran’s history of human rights abuses and its alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Legal and Humanitarian Stakes

Legal scholars warn that the president’s social media posts could serve as evidence in future international courts. Neil Quilliam of Chatham House noted that the sentiment expressed by Trump was “conceptually larger than genocide,” given the multi-ethnic and ancient nature of Iranian society.

As the 1 a.m. BST (8 p.m. EST) deadline nears, the UK government has maintained a distance. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that “this isn’t our war,” though the administration faces mounting pressure from opposition leaders to rescind U.S. access to British airbases to avoid becoming an “accomplice to war crimes.”
