WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD — In a dramatic reversal less than two hours before a “final” deadline for massive infrastructure strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of military operations against Iran. The decision comes after an urgent diplomatic intervention by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The move, which Trump described on Truth Social as a “double-sided CEASEFIRE,” marks the most significant de-escalation since the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran began on February 28.

The “10-Point Proposal”

The president indicated that the suspension is contingent upon the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING” of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran. Crucially, Trump revealed that the U.S. has received a 10-point proposal from Iranian officials, which he characterized as a “workable basis” for a definitive peace agreement.

“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran,” Trump posted. “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to… a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalised and consummated.”

Pakistan’s Pivotal Role

The breakthrough follows weeks of Islamabad positioning itself as the primary facilitator between Washington and Tehran. Prime Minister Sharif’s 11th-hour appeal on Tuesday evening urged both sides to allow “diplomacy to run its course” to prevent the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Following the Prime Minister’s public appeal, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar engaged in a whirlwind of “shuttle diplomacy,” holding consecutive calls with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, and Morocco to coordinate regional support for the pause.

From “Civilization’s End” to “Longterm Peace”

The sudden shift in tone from the White House is striking. Only hours earlier, President Trump had warned that an entire “civilization” could die in the coming night. However, the emergence of the 10-point Iranian proposal appears to have shifted the administration’s calculus.

While the specific clauses of the proposal remain confidential, previous Iranian demands reported by Press TV included:

  • Reparations: Guaranteed payment for war damages.

  • Sovereignty: Recognition of Iran’s authority over the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Security: Mechanisms to ensure the conflict is not reimposed.

  • Sanctions: The lifting of economic restrictions as part of a reconstruction effort.

Global Relief as Markets React

The news of the ceasefire brought immediate, if cautious, relief to global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, which handles approximately 20% of the world’s petroleum and liquefied natural gas, has been effectively closed for weeks, triggering a worldwide fuel crisis.

While Iran has not yet officially confirmed its acceptance of the two-week window, senior officials in Tehran told Reuters they are “positively reviewing” the request. If the Strait is reopened as promised, it would mark the end of a maritime blockade that has brought the global economy to the brink of recession.

“It is an Honour to have this Longterm problem close to resolution,” Trump concluded in his announcement, signaling that the next 14 days will be the most critical period for Middle Eastern diplomacy in decades.
