The Democratic National Committee (DNC) was quick to respond to the data. Kendall Witmer, the DNC’s rapid response director, accused President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance of “tanking the economy for working families.”
“Americans are drowning under rising costs, flat wages, high unemployment, and historic layoffs,” Witmer said in a statement. “It’s no wonder they’re concerned about how they’re going to make ends meet.”
The administration has yet to issue a formal rebuttal to the specific findings of the Michigan survey, though it continues to defend its military and economic strategies as necessary for national security.

The economic malaise coincides with a troubling shift in national morale. According to the latest Gallup World Happiness Report, the United States has officially fallen out of the top 20 happiest countries in the world.
