Islamabad — Pakistan’s capital has been placed under sweeping security restrictions as authorities prepare for a potential second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran, expected to take place in the coming days.
Although no official confirmation has been issued by Islamabad, Washington, or Tehran, the scale of the security measures suggests that preparations for high-level diplomatic engagement are already underway.
Capital Locked Down
Authorities have imposed strict controls across Islamabad and the neighboring city of Rawalpindi. The highly sensitive Red Zone, home to key government institutions and diplomatic missions, has been sealed off to the general public, with access limited to authorized personnel through designated entry points.
Movement within the Diplomatic Enclave remains restricted, while key venues such as the Serena Hotel Islamabad and Islamabad Marriott Hotel have implemented tight security protocols. Guests have reportedly been asked to vacate as a precautionary measure ahead of the anticipated arrival of foreign delegations.
Transport Halted, Daily Life Disrupted
The security lockdown has significantly disrupted daily life. Major roads, including Srinagar Highway, Islamabad Expressway, and Club Road, are facing intermittent closures, while public transport in Rawalpindi has been suspended entirely.
Authorities have also shut down intercity bus terminals and halted both private and commercial transport services. Markets and petrol stations in key areas of Rawalpindi were ordered to close from midnight, sharply limiting economic activity.
Local officials warned residents to expect continued disruptions. “Heavy and public transport is being suspended until further notice,” the district administration announced, urging citizens to cooperate with security forces.
Heightened Surveillance Along Key Routes
Security has been intensified along strategic corridors, particularly the route linking Nur Khan Airbase to central Islamabad. Residents along these routes have received formal notices advising them not to film or photograph official convoys, a measure aimed at maintaining operational secrecy.
Police presence has been reinforced in multiple jurisdictions, including New Town, Sadiqabad, and Chaklala, reflecting concerns over potential security risks tied to the high-profile diplomatic activity.
Diplomacy Under Guard
The expected talks, informally dubbed the “Islamabad Talks,” could mark a critical moment in efforts to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly amid ongoing instability linked to the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional conflict.
Pakistan has positioned itself as a potential mediator in recent weeks, facilitating communication between the two sides. Hosting such negotiations would elevate Islamabad’s diplomatic role at a time when global attention remains fixed on the Middle East.
Uncertainty Remains
Despite the visible preparations, uncertainty persists. Officials have not publicly confirmed the timing, agenda, or even the certainty of the talks taking place.
For now, the capital remains on edge, its streets quieter than usual, its infrastructure reoriented toward security, whether the heightened alert leads to a diplomatic breakthrough or proves to be precautionary remains to be seen.
