Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said she is considering potential action following reports that agents linked to the CIA took part in a drug enforcement operation on Mexican soil without federal authorization.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, Sheinbaum stressed that foreign agents are not permitted to operate independently within Mexico. She described such actions as falling outside established bilateral security agreements between Mexico and the United States.

Diplomatic tensions rise
The controversy stems from a recent operation targeting clandestine drug laboratories near the U.S.-Mexico border, in the northern state of Chihuahua. The raid was followed by a fatal vehicle crash that killed two U.S. officials and two Mexican investigators.
Mexican authorities have since issued a formal diplomatic note to Washington, seeking clarification over the reported involvement of U.S. intelligence personnel.
While Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexican military forces participated in the operation, she emphasized that the federal government had not been informed of any foreign presence on the ground.

Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch reinforced that position, stating that while intelligence sharing between the two countries continues, foreign agents have not previously conducted field operations alongside Mexican forces.

The president said she has requested a full report from the U.S. ambassador and plans to consult with Maria Eugenia Campos regarding the circumstances surrounding the raid.
“It is very important that something like this does not go unaddressed,” Sheinbaum said, signaling that the federal government may take measures depending on the findings.
