Poland and Ukraine have announced plans to jointly develop a large-scale “drone army” aimed at reinforcing Europe’s air defense capabilities, drawing on Kyiv’s battlefield experience to counter evolving security threats.

The initiative was unveiled by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the “Path to the Reconstruction of Ukraine” conference held in Rzeszów. The event brought together key officials, including Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and served as a precursor to a broader reconstruction summit scheduled for June in Gdańsk.

According to Tusk, the project aims to achieve an “unprecedented technological leap” in the development of combat-ready unmanned aerial systems. The plan will rely heavily on Ukraine’s operational expertise, gained through years of conflict and extensive use of drone technology on the battlefield.

The proposed “drone army” will consist of a wide and modern fleet of unmanned systems designed to monitor and defend airspace across Poland and potentially other parts of Europe. The initiative reflects growing concern among European nations about the need to adapt to new forms of warfare, particularly the increasing role of drones in military operations.

Funding for the project is expected to come from both Polish national resources and contributions from the European Union, highlighting the broader strategic importance of the initiative for regional security.

The announcement underscores the deepening defense cooperation between Warsaw and Kyiv, as well as Europe’s efforts to strengthen its security architecture in response to ongoing tensions with Russia.

As the nature of warfare continues to evolve, the development of advanced unmanned systems is becoming a central pillar of modern defense strategies. For Poland and Ukraine, the joint initiative represents both a technological investment and a strategic signal of closer military alignment in the face of shared challenges.
