The suspect involved in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump, according to court documents presented on Monday.
Cole Thomas Allen, 31, appeared before a federal court in Washington, where prosecutors outlined the severity of the accusations. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine told the court that Allen had “attempted to assassinate the President of the United States,” marking a dramatic escalation in the legal case following Saturday’s incident.
In addition to the attempted assassination charge, Allen faces two further counts related to weapons possession. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.

According to reports, the suspect has not yet entered a plea. Prosecutors have requested that he remain in custody while the case proceeds, citing the seriousness of the charges and potential risks.
Investigators also presented evidence indicating that Allen had brought multiple weapons to Washington. Photographs of these weapons were shared with the defense as part of the ongoing legal process.
The shooting occurred during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a high-profile event attended by political leaders, journalists, and public figures. The incident triggered a rapid security response, with President Trump and other officials escorted to safety.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described the attack as the third major attempt on Trump’s life, following two separate incidents reported in 2024. Her comments underscore growing concerns about the security of senior political figures in the United States.
Authorities continue to investigate the suspect’s motives and any possible connections, although initial findings suggest he acted alone.
The case now moves into the judicial phase, where it is expected to draw significant national attention given the gravity of the allegations and the high-profile nature of the target.
