France has deployed its carrier strike group toward the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden as concerns over maritime security in and around the Strait of Hormuz continue to intensify amid ongoing regional tensions.

The French Defense Ministry confirmed Wednesday that the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its escort vessels crossed the Suez Canal and are now heading toward the southern Red Sea.

According to the ministry, the deployment is intended to support international maritime security operations and help stabilize shipping routes affected by the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

“The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has a global impact,” the ministry said in a statement, while emphasizing that France “is not a party to the conflict” and remains committed to international law and national sovereignty.

Maritime security mission

French officials stated that the carrier group will operate in what they described as a “defensive posture,” contributing to a multinational maritime security initiative involving more than 40 countries.

The deployment aims to assess operational conditions in the region and provide additional flexibility for crisis response if tensions escalate further.

French authorities also said the mission would help integrate allied naval capabilities into a coordinated defensive framework in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Paris stressed that the carrier deployment is separate from ongoing combat operations in the region and is designed specifically to reinforce maritime security and reassure global shipping operators.

Hormuz tensions continue

Regional instability has grown sharply since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israeli targets and American allies across the Gulf region.

The confrontation also contributed to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important energy transit routes.

A ceasefire mediated by Pakistan took effect on April 8, though negotiations in Islamabad failed to secure a lasting political agreement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a fixed deadline.

Since April 13, US naval forces have enforced a blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strait, further increasing tensions across the region.

French officials said the latest deployment is intended to help preserve stability and maintain safe navigation for commercial shipping amid continuing uncertainty in the Gulf and surrounding waterways.
