Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks Friday in Rome amid increasing tensions between Washington and several European governments under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The meeting took place at Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the Italian prime minister, according to Italian media reports.
Before meeting Meloni, Rubio also held discussions with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, focusing on transatlantic cooperation, regional security, and ongoing international crises.

Italy Emphasizes the Importance of Western Unity
Speaking ahead of the talks, Tajani stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties between Europe and the United States despite growing disagreements across several geopolitical issues.
“I am convinced that Europe needs America, Italy needs America, but the United States also needs Europe and Italy,” Tajani reportedly told Rubio.
“These are the transatlantic relations; Western unity is fundamental,” he added.
The diplomatic meetings come at a sensitive moment for relations between the Trump administration and European allies, particularly over the conflict involving Iran, disputes surrounding NATO defense spending, trade tariffs, and increasingly confrontational rhetoric from Washington toward traditional partners.
Rubio Arrives After Vatican Visit
Rubio arrived in Rome following a high-profile meeting on Thursday with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican City.
The Vatican meeting focused heavily on the situation in the Middle East and broader diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
However, relations between President Trump and the Vatican have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks.
Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly called for restraint, dialogue, and de-escalation in the Iran conflict, while warning about the humanitarian consequences of continued military operations.
Trump has publicly criticized the pontiff over his comments, accusing him of being “weak” on foreign policy and suggesting the Vatican’s position indirectly benefited Tehran.
Europe Faces Difficult Balancing Act
Italy now finds itself navigating a delicate balancing act between maintaining close ties with Washington and preserving unity within Europe as tensions rise over security, defense, and foreign policy priorities.
Meloni has generally maintained a stronger relationship with Trump than many other European leaders, but Rome also remains committed to NATO cooperation and broader European strategic coordination.
Analysts say the Rome meetings underline growing concern among European governments about the future direction of transatlantic relations as geopolitical crises continue to intensify across multiple regions.
