US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, linking the decision directly to Warsaw’s political leadership and his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the deployment followed what he described as the “successful election” of Nawrocki, whom he publicly endorsed during Poland’s presidential campaign.
“Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I was proud to endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump wrote.
The announcement comes at a time of growing strain between Washington and several NATO allies, particularly over disagreements surrounding the United States’ military operations against Iran and broader questions about burden-sharing within the alliance.
Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for relying too heavily on American military protection while failing to support US strategic priorities fully. Since returning to the White House, he has intensified pressure on European allies to increase defense commitments and align more closely with Washington’s foreign policy objectives.
The latest deployment decision follows Trump’s recent order to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused the US administration of being “humiliated” by Tehran during the Iran conflict.
American military officials previously said the withdrawal from Germany contributed to delays in planned troop deployments to Poland. However, it remains unclear whether the newly announced deployment represents a replacement for those delayed forces or an entirely separate military expansion.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki welcomed the decision, thanking Trump publicly and describing the troop deployment as an important step for Poland’s national security.
“I thank US President Donald J. Trump for his friendship toward Poland and for the decisions whose practical dimension we see very clearly today,” Nawrocki wrote on social media.
“The security of Poland and the Polish people is my top priority.”
The move also comes ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Sweden, where alliance cohesion and defense coordination are expected to dominate discussions.
Speaking before departing for Sweden, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump remained deeply frustrated with NATO allies that declined to allow the United States to use military bases for operations targeting Iran.
Rubio argued that access to allied bases has historically been one of the principal strategic benefits of NATO membership for Washington.
“When that is the key rationale for why you’re in NATO, and then you have countries like Spain denying us the use of these bases, well, then, why are you in NATO?” Rubio said.
“That’s a very fair question.”
The deployment announcement contrasts with comments made earlier this week by General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe and commander of US European Command, who said there were no immediate plans for additional redeployments in Europe beyond the troop withdrawal from Germany.
“As allies build up their capability, the United States can pull capability back and use it for other global priorities,” Grynkewich said during remarks in Brussels.
The latest developments highlight growing uncertainty over the future direction of NATO under Trump’s second administration, particularly as divisions emerge over military strategy, burden-sharing, and relations with Iran.
