The United States launched its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign spectacularly on Friday night, defeating Paraguay 4,1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and rewriting several pages of the nation’s football history in the process.

Forward Folarin Balogun was the star of the evening, scoring twice to become the first American player to register multiple goals in a World Cup match since Bert Patenaude’s famous hat trick against Paraguay during the inaugural tournament in 1930. In a remarkable coincidence, the United States also defeated Paraguay in that historic encounter.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
Paraguay showed early intent and nearly opened the scoring inside the first three minutes, but goalkeeper Matt Freese produced an important save to keep the match level. Moments later, Tim Weah tested Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill as the hosts began to settle into the contest.
The breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute. Christian Pulisic delivered a precise pass into the area, where Weston McKennie held off defender Damián Bobadilla before firing the ball into the net. The disappointment was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Pulisic once again provided the creative spark, setting up Balogun for his first World Cup goal. The New York-born striker, who committed his international future to the United States in 2023 after progressing through England’s youth system, calmly finished to make it 2,0.
After Chris Richards narrowly missed adding a third, Balogun struck again before the break, completing a clinical move and giving the hosts a commanding 3,0 lead at halftime.
Balogun and Reyna Seal a Record-Breaking Night
Paraguay attempted to respond after the interval but struggled to cope with the energy and organisation of the American side. The hosts continued to dominate possession and created several opportunities to extend their lead.
The South Americans eventually found a way back into the match in the 73rd minute, when Mauricio finished after being set up by Julio Enciso, reducing the deficit to 3,1.
Any hopes of a Paraguayan comeback were extinguished deep into stoppage time. Substitute Gio Reyna capped the evening with a fourth goal, sending the home supporters into celebration and sealing the most prolific World Cup victory in U.S. history.
The four-goal tally surpassed the team’s previous best at the tournament and also represented the first time the United States had scored three or more goals in a World Cup match since 2002. By comparison, the Americans managed only three goals during their entire campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
A Historic Rivalry Renewed
Friday’s result also reinforced the United States’ impressive recent record against Paraguay. The victory was the fourth consecutive win over the South American side and improved the overall head-to-head record to five wins, two defeats, and two draws.
The connection between the two nations stretches back to the first FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, when Bert Patenaude’s hat trick secured a 3,0 American victory. Nearly a century later, Balogun’s two-goal performance ensured another memorable chapter in that rivalry.
Eyes on the Knockout Stage
The strong start gives the United States an early advantage in Group D and boosts confidence ahead of their second match against Australia, scheduled for 19 June at Lumen Field in Seattle. Australia will open its campaign against Turkey in Vancouver.
Another positive result could place the Americans in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout rounds, something they have achieved in three of their last four World Cup appearances.
With an attacking display that combined intensity, creativity, and clinical finishing, the United States has announced itself as a serious contender on home soil. For a nation hoping to make its deepest World Cup run in decades, the opening night could hardly have gone any better.
