Belgium recovered from an early setback to secure a 1,1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G, after the North Africans produced an impressive and disciplined display.

Egypt began the contest with confidence, defending compactly and looking dangerous whenever they moved forward. Their positive approach was rewarded in the first half when midfielder Emam Ashour broke the deadlock with a superb strike from outside the penalty area after being picked out by captain Mohamed Salah, who celebrated his birthday with a key contribution.

The goal stunned the Belgian side, who struggled to find rhythm before the interval against an organised Egyptian defence. However, the Red Devils emerged from the break with greater urgency and immediately began to push for an equaliser.

Kevin De Bruyne came close to restoring parity in the 53rd minute when his powerful free kick crashed against the woodwork, a warning sign that Belgium was beginning to take control of the game. The pressure eventually paid off, although fortune played its part. A dangerous Belgian attack ended with Egyptian defender Ahmed Hany inadvertently turning the ball into his own net, bringing the score level.

The equaliser set up an entertaining final phase, with both teams searching for a winning goal. Belgium pressed forward, relying on the creativity of De Bruyne and the movement of their attacking players, while Egypt remained a threat on the counterattack through Salah and Ashour.

Despite the determination shown by both sides, neither team was able to find a decisive breakthrough before the final whistle, leaving them to settle for a share of the points.

The result means Belgium and Egypt begin their Group G campaigns with one point each. The group’s other opening fixture will see Iran take on New Zealand, with that match concluding the first round of games in the section.

For Egypt, the draw will be viewed as an encouraging result against one of Europe’s leading football nations, while Belgium will know that improvements are needed if they are to establish themselves as contenders for a deep run in the tournament.
