A deadly shooting in Montreal has left a police officer, a civilian, and the suspected gunman dead, prompting a major security response and raising concerns about a possible targeted attack near a Jewish community center.

Authorities confirmed that the incident unfolded on Monday in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montreal, one of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods. The exchange of gunfire triggered panic among residents and led police to issue urgent warnings for people to remain indoors while the situation was brought under control.

Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

The Montreal Police Service announced the death of one of its officers during the operation.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers while performing his civic duty,” the department said in a statement published on social media.

Canadian authorities also confirmed the death of a resident and the suspected attacker, bringing the death toll to three.

Gunfire Erupts Upon Police Arrival

According to Montreal Police Chief Fadi Dagher, officers responding to the scene came under immediate gunfire upon arrival.

Law enforcement quickly established a security perimeter around the area and warned residents to stay indoors and lock their doors as officers searched for what was initially described as an armed and highly dangerous suspect.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that emergency alerts were issued while heavily armed police units moved into the neighborhood.

Authorities later announced that the suspect had been “neutralized” and indicated that investigators currently believe he acted alone.

Investigation Continues

Police have not yet established a motive for the attack.

Chief Dagher cautioned against premature conclusions, stating that investigators were still working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“We will not rush to any final conclusions,” he told reporters, emphasizing that it remains too early to identify the motives behind the violence.

Although the immediate security threat has ended and emergency measures in the area have been lifted, investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Concerns Over Possible Community Targeting

The incident occurred near a local Chabad center, according to the Jewish emergency response organization ZAKA.

The organization described the shooting as a possible attack targeting the surrounding community, though officials have not yet confirmed whether the location was deliberately chosen.

Chabad-Lubavitch is one of the world’s most prominent Hasidic Jewish movements. Founded in Eastern Europe during the late eighteenth century, the movement operates thousands of educational, religious, and community institutions across more than one hundred countries.

Authorities have not announced any evidence linking the suspect to extremist organizations or ideological motives, and investigators continue to examine all possible scenarios.

Community in Shock

The shooting has shaken Montreal residents, particularly in a neighborhood known for its diversity and generally peaceful atmosphere.

Community leaders, religious organizations, and local officials have expressed condolences to the families of the victims and support for the injured and affected residents.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the suspect, the sequence of events, and any potential motives behind one of the city’s most serious violent incidents in recent years.
