Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a convincing 3,1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match, although goal difference prevented the Balkan nation from finishing in the top two.
The result eliminated Qatar from the tournament and left Bosnia and Herzegovina in third place with four points, level with Canada but behind the North Americans on goal difference. Switzerland secured first place in the group with seven points after defeating Canada 2,1.
Despite missing out on automatic qualification, Bosnia and Herzegovina remain in contention for a place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Bosnia takes control
Bosnia started brightly and created several early chances before finally breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute.
Young midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic produced a superb strike from outside the penalty area, curling the ball into the top corner to give his side a deserved lead.
The advantage doubled just five minutes later when a dangerous Bosnian attack resulted in an own goal by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The goalkeeper inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure, leaving Qatar facing a difficult task.
The 2022 World Cup hosts responded before halftime. Hassan Al-Haydos reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute after a well-worked move involving Edmilson Junior, giving Qatar renewed hope heading into the break.
Mahmic seals victory
Qatar attempted to push forward in the second half and came close on several occasions through Akram Afif and Almoez Ali, but Bosnia remained dangerous on the counterattack.
The decisive moment arrived in the 80th minute when substitute Ermin Mahmic converted from close range following a corner kick, restoring Bosnia’s two-goal cushion and effectively ending Qatar’s hopes of a comeback.
Bosnia continued to threaten, while goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and the defense held firm against late Qatari pressure.
Qualification hopes remain alive
The victory leaves Bosnia and Herzegovina with four points from three matches, the same total as Canada. However, the Canadians advanced automatically due to a superior goal difference.
Bosnia finished the group stage with a goal difference of minus one, compared with Canada’s plus five, a gap that ultimately proved decisive.
Nevertheless, the Balkan nation could still qualify for the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams, potentially earning their first appearance in the second round of a FIFA World Cup.
For Qatar, the defeat marks the end of their campaign. The Middle Eastern side became the sixth team eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after failing to collect enough points in Group B.
While Bosnia now awaits results elsewhere to determine their fate, the victory ensured they remain in the tournament conversation and kept alive hopes of making national football history.
