Switzerland secured top spot in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada 2,1 in an entertaining final group-stage encounter, finishing with seven points and confirming their place in the knockout rounds.

Canada also progressed despite the defeat, finishing second on four points and advancing thanks to a superior goal difference over Bosnia and Herzegovina, who ended the group stage in third place.

After a balanced first half that ended goalless, Switzerland emerged from the interval with renewed attacking intent and quickly took control of the match.

Just one minute into the second half, Johan Manzambi delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area and found Rubén Vargas, who calmly finished from close range to give the Swiss a 1,0 lead.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in Switzerland’s favour, and the Europeans doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. Breel Embolo provided the assist after a strong attacking move, allowing Manzambi to finish clinically and make it 2,0.

Canada responded by increasing the tempo and introducing fresh attacking options from the bench. Their persistence was rewarded in the 76th minute when Promise David found space inside the penalty area and fired a precise finish beyond Gregor Kobel to reduce the deficit to 2,1.

The final stages became increasingly intense as Canada pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Jacob Shaffelburg’s introduction added urgency to the attack, while Alistair Johnston and Promise David both forced important saves from Kobel deep into stoppage time.

Switzerland’s defence, led by Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi, remained composed under pressure and successfully protected the lead until the final whistle.

Switzerland finishes strong

The victory means Switzerland completes the group stage unbeaten, collecting seven points from three matches and securing first place in Group B.

Granit Xhaka once again played a key role in midfield, while the partnership between Embolo and Manzambi proved decisive in breaking down the Canadian defence.

For Canada, qualification remains a significant achievement as the tournament co-hosts reach the Round of 32 despite suffering their first defeat of the competition.

The North Americans finished level on points with Bosnia and Herzegovina but advanced thanks to a superior goal difference, ensuring their World Cup journey continues.

Both nations now turn their attention to the knockout phase, where Switzerland will enter as group winners while Canada prepares for a challenging Round of 32 encounter after securing second place.
