SPIELBERG, Austria, June 27, 2026, George Russell claimed pole position for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after producing a sensational final lap of 1:06.113 during a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring.
The Mercedes driver delivered his fastest lap in the closing moments of Q3, beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while Max Verstappen’s late crash brought out yellow flags and added tension to the session. Russell’s lap was briefly reviewed by race stewards for a possible yellow flag infringement before ultimately being confirmed, securing Mercedes another major result after dominating practice throughout the weekend.

Mercedes and Ferrari battle for pole
Qualifying began with Mercedes carrying the momentum from free practice, where Kimi Antonelli had topped both Friday sessions, and Russell led Saturday’s final practice.
The opening phase saw Lando Norris initially set the pace before Antonelli emerged fastest in Q1, ahead of Norris and Hamilton.
In Q2, Ferrari briefly appeared to have the upper hand. Charles Leclerc posted the fastest lap before Antonelli once again demonstrated Mercedes’ impressive pace with a 1:06.763. Russell recovered from an earlier mistake to comfortably progress into the final shootout.
Verstappen’s crash changes the finale
The decisive Q3 delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
Antonelli initially claimed provisional pole before Hamilton briefly moved to the top of the timesheets. Moments later, Leclerc improved again and looked set to secure Ferrari’s first pole of the year.
However, everything changed in the closing seconds.
Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at Turn 9, sliding through the gravel and into the tire barriers, bringing out yellow flags. Despite the incident, Russell completed an outstanding final lap to snatch pole position with a time nearly a quarter of a second faster than his practice benchmark.
Following a brief review by the stewards regarding the yellow flag conditions, Russell’s lap was confirmed, giving the Briton pole position for Sunday’s race.
Bortoleto narrowly misses Q3
Gabriel Bortoleto enjoyed another encouraging qualifying performance for Audi despite narrowly missing out on a place in the final qualifying segment.
The Brazilian advanced comfortably from Q1 and improved his pace in Q2 with a lap of 1:07.293. Although it was not enough to reach Q3, Bortoleto secured 12th on the grid and comfortably outperformed teammate Nico Hülkenberg, who qualified 14th.
The result continues Bortoleto’s positive progress in his rookie Formula 1 campaign.
