England survived a major scare at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, coming from behind to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2,1 and secure a place in the Round of 16 thanks to a late brace from captain Harry Kane.
The Three Lions looked destined for a shock elimination after trailing for much of the match, but Kane once again delivered on the biggest stage, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to rescue England and end DR Congo’s impressive World Cup run.
The African side stunned England early at the Estadio Azteca when Brian Cipenga broke the deadlock in the seventh minute. Chancel Mbemba provided the assist, and Cipenga calmly finished past Jordan Pickford to give DR Congo an unexpected lead.
England dominated possession for long periods but struggled to convert their chances. Jude Bellingham forced several saves, Marcus Rashford missed promising opportunities, and Harry Kane was repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and a disciplined Congolese defence.
DR Congo nearly doubled their advantage before halftime when Yoane Wissa struck the post, leaving England relieved to trail by only a single goal at the break.
Manager Gareth Southgate responded by introducing Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon early in the second half, injecting fresh energy into England’s attack. The changes gradually shifted the momentum as England increased the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute. Anthony Gordon delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Harry Kane rose highest to head home the equaliser and reignite England’s hopes.
With extra time looming, England completed the turnaround four minutes from full time. Following another dangerous attacking move, Gordon again played a decisive role by setting up Kane, who struck a superb right-footed finish into the top corner in the 86th minute to complete the comeback.
Kane’s brace brought his FIFA World Cup tally to 13 career goals, further cementing his place among England’s greatest goalscorers on the international stage.
DR Congo pushed forward desperately during stoppage time, but England’s defence held firm despite several dangerous free kicks and late attacks.
The victory sends England into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Mexico on Sunday at the iconic Estadio Azteca after the Mexicans defeated Ecuador 2,0.
While England advances, DR Congo leaves the tournament with considerable credit after producing one of its finest World Cup campaigns, pushing one of football’s traditional powers to the limit before narrowly falling short.
