Switzerland ended an 88-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout victory on Thursday after defeating Algeria 2,0 in Vancouver to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 tournament.

Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ensured the Swiss progressed with a composed and disciplined performance, earning their first victory in a World Cup knockout match since 1938.

The win sends Switzerland into the next round, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana, managed by Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, next Tuesday in Vancouver.

Embolo Gives Switzerland an Early Advantage

Switzerland made the perfect start by taking the lead after just ten minutes.

A swift counterattack saw Johan Manzambi deliver a precise pass into the penalty area, where Breel Embolo finished confidently to beat goalkeeper Luca Zidane and put the Swiss ahead.

Although Algeria responded with several dangerous attacks through Houssem Aouar, Riyad Mahrez, and Ibrahim Maza, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and the defence remained composed to preserve the lead before halftime.

Ndoye Doubles the Lead

The second half could hardly have begun better for Switzerland.

Just one minute after the restart, Dan Ndoye finished clinically from close range to make it 2,0, giving Murat Yakin’s side a comfortable cushion.

The second goal forced Algeria to push further forward, but the North African side struggled to create clear scoring opportunities despite introducing fresh attacking options, including Amine Gouiri and Anis Hadj Moussa.

Swiss Control Sees Out the Victory

Led by captain Granit Xhaka, Switzerland controlled possession for long periods and managed the closing stages with confidence.

The Swiss even came close to extending their lead through Fabian Rieder, Noah Okafor, and Remo Freuler, while Algeria’s attempts to reduce the deficit were repeatedly denied by an organized defensive performance.

Although Switzerland had to cope with injuries to Denis Zakaria and Johan Manzambi during the match, the team maintained its structure and comfortably protected its clean sheet.

Round of 16 Awaits

The victory represents a significant milestone for Swiss football, ending decades without a World Cup knockout triumph.

Switzerland will now remain in Vancouver to prepare for a Round of 16 encounter against either Colombia or Ghana, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

Having combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing, the Swiss arrive in the next round full of confidence as their impressive World Cup campaign continues.
