Portugal secured a dramatic 2,1 victory over Croatia on Thursday to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to a late header from Gonçalo Ramos after a thrilling contest that stretched deep into stoppage time.

The victory sets up an enticing Iberian showdown against Spain, who earlier swept aside Austria 3,0 to advance.

Croatia Strike First

After an encouraging first half from Portugal, it was Croatia who broke the deadlock early in the second period.

Veteran winger Ivan Perišić found the net after a dangerous attack down Portugal’s left flank, giving the Croatians a deserved lead and placing Roberto Martínez’s side under intense pressure.

Despite controlling long spells of possession, Portugal struggled to convert their chances before finally finding a response.

Ronaldo Levels from the Spot

Cristiano Ronaldo restored parity from the penalty spot, calmly converting to become the oldest player ever to score in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese captain later thought he had scored again, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Ronaldo was visibly frustrated when substituted late in the match, but Portugal’s decisive moment was still to come.

Gonçalo Ramos Delivers Again

With the match heading into prolonged stoppage time, substitute Rafael Leão produced a brilliant run down the left wing before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area.

Gonçalo Ramos rose above the Croatian defence to head home the winning goal, sending Portugal into the last 16 and earning praise for once again making a decisive impact after coming off the bench.

Technology Plays a Crucial Role

The match also highlighted one of the tournament’s newest technological innovations.

Deep into stoppage time, Croatia believed they had equalised through Mario Pašalić, following a move involving Joško Gvardiol and Igor Matanović.

However, the goal was overturned after the semi-automated offside system, assisted by a microchip embedded inside the official World Cup match ball, detected an almost imperceptible touch from Matanović before the pass reached Pašalić.

That tiny contact was enough to place the Croatian midfielder in an offside position, allowing officials to disallow what would have been a dramatic 2,2 equaliser correctly.

The decision saved time and proved to be one of the most significant technological interventions seen during the tournament so far.

Diogo Costa Keeps Portugal Alive

While Ramos scored the winner, goalkeeper Diogo Costa was equally instrumental in Portugal’s success.

The shot stopper made several outstanding saves throughout the match, denying Ante Budimir early before producing crucial stops against Mateo Kovačić, Luka Sučić, and Igor Matanović.

Without his heroics, Portugal’s World Cup journey could have ended.

Iberian Clash Awaits

Portugal now advances to face European champions Spain in what promises to be one of the standout Round of 16 fixtures.

After surviving an emotional and dramatic battle against Croatia, Roberto Martínez’s side will hope to carry their resilience into one of the tournament’s biggest matches.
