Colombia secured the final place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ghana 1,0 on Friday in Kansas City, ending the African side’s campaign and setting up a knockout clash with Switzerland.
A first-half goal from Jhon Arias proved decisive at Arrowhead Stadium, as the South Americans controlled much of the match but failed to turn their dominance into a larger scoreline.
Arias Makes the Difference
Ghana almost struck first through Thomas Partey inside the opening minute, but Colombia soon settled into the match and began dictating possession.
The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute. Luis Suárez, who had entered early after Jhon Córdoba was forced off through injury, delivered a cross from the right that Arias finished from close range to give Colombia the lead.
It was Suárez’s first direct goal contribution of the tournament, and it came only minutes after he was introduced.
Colombia Controls the Game
Colombia continued to look the more dangerous side after taking the lead.
Luis Díaz came close to doubling the advantage before halftime, while Johan Mojica also forced a save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi during stoppage time.
After the break, Richard Ríos replaced captain James Rodríguez, giving Colombia fresh energy in midfield.
The South Americans pushed again through Gustavo Puerta, Díaz and Davinson Sánchez, but Ati-Zigi kept Ghana alive with several important saves.
Ghana’s Struggle to Threaten
Carlos Queiroz’s Ghana side found it difficult to create clear chances despite the presence of Partey, Iñaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo and Jordan Ayew.
Their best moments came from distance and blocked efforts, but Colombia’s defence, led by Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí, remained composed throughout.
The defeat ended Ghana’s fifth World Cup campaign and denied Queiroz a return to the Round of 16.
Switzerland Await
Colombia, winners of Group K ahead of Portugal, now advance to face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.
The Swiss reached the next round after a 2,0 victory over Algeria.
For Colombia, the victory also ended a 12-year wait for a knockout win at the World Cup and confirmed their status as one of the tournament’s most disciplined and organized sides.
