Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat England 2,1 in the second semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, booking a place in Sunday’s final against Spain in what promises to be one of the most anticipated clashes in recent football history.

The defending world champions overturned England’s lead in the closing minutes at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scoring late goals after Anthony Gordon had put the Three Lions ahead in the second half.

England looked destined for the final

After a tense and evenly balanced first half, England broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished a well-worked move to give Thomas Tuchel’s side the advantage.

The goal appeared to put England on course for its first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966. The Three Lions defended resolutely for much of the second half while attempting to protect their narrow lead.

However, Argentina steadily increased the pressure, dominating possession and creating a series of dangerous opportunities as the match entered its closing stages.

Argentina’s late comeback

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute.

Enzo Fernández fired home the equaliser after excellent work by Lionel Messi, bringing Argentina level and energising thousands of Albiceleste supporters inside the stadium.

With England struggling to regain control, Argentina continued pushing forward, and deep into stoppage time Lautaro Martínez completed the turnaround by converting another move created by Messi to seal a memorable 2,1 victory.

Messi inspires another final appearance

At 39 years old, Lionel Messi once again proved decisive on the biggest stage, providing two assists and orchestrating Argentina’s comeback.

The victory sends Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final as they pursue a fourth World Cup title and attempt to successfully defend the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier.

Messi also strengthened his position in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot after another influential display.

Spain awaits in the final

Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Spain secured its place in the championship match after defeating France 2,0 in the first semifinal, continuing an unbeaten run throughout the tournament.

The final will feature the reigning world champions against the reigning European champions, with many viewing it as a dream showdown between two of international football’s strongest teams.

England, meanwhile, will face France in the third-place playoff as another World Cup campaign ends in semifinal disappointment.
