23 August 2026 | Estádio do Dragão
Final: FC Porto 2, 0 FC Arouca

FC Porto maintained their perfect start to the Liga Portugal Betclic season with a 2, 0 victory over FC Arouca at the Estádio do Dragão, producing a dominant second half to overcome a visiting side that had also arrived at Matchday 3 with a 100 percent record.

After a goalless first half, Gabri Veiga broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, before substitute Borja Sainz added the second in the 86th.

The victory gave Francesco Farioli’s side a remarkable early league sequence: three matches, three victories, six goals scored and none conceded.

Arouca Resist Porto’s First Half Pressure

FC Porto controlled much of the opening period but struggled to turn their territorial superiority into a goal.

William Gomes and Gabri Veiga were involved in several promising attacking situations, while Victor Froholdt twice threatened in the closing stages of the half.

Arouca goalkeeper Ignacio de Arruabarrena played an important role in keeping the hosts out.

Arouca also demonstrated that they could threaten when given space. Iván Barbero forced a save with a header in the 43rd minute, ensuring Porto could not become careless despite their greater attacking volume.

At half time, the score remained 0, 0.

Porto Increase the Pressure

The complexion of the game changed after the interval.

Porto emerged with greater attacking intensity and began creating chances with increasing frequency.

There appeared to be a breakthrough in the 53rd minute, but a Porto goal was disallowed following a foul on Arruabarrena.

Rather than allowing the decision to disrupt their momentum, the Dragons continued to push.

Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal.

Gabri Veiga Breaks the Deadlock

In the 67th minute, Gabri Veiga finally converted Porto’s superiority into a tangible advantage.

The Spanish midfielder struck to make it 1, 0, giving the home side the breakthrough they had been searching for throughout the evening.

It was Veiga’s second league goal of the season after also scoring against FC Alverca on Matchday 1.

With Arouca now required to chase the game, more space became available for Porto.

Francesco Farioli turned to his bench, and one of those changes would ultimately settle the contest.

Borja Sainz Delivers Again

Borja Sainz entered in the 76th minute, replacing William Gomes.

Ten minutes later, he scored.

Pepê supplied the assist and Sainz finished with his left foot from inside the penalty area to double Porto’s advantage in the 86th minute.

It was another significant contribution from the Spanish winger.

Sainz had also scored Porto’s second goal in the 2, 0 victory away to Rio Ave on Matchday 2, meaning he had now found the net in consecutive league appearances.

Arouca attempted to respond during stoppage time, with Naïs Djouahra going close, but Porto protected another clean sheet.

The final whistle confirmed a third consecutive 2, 0 league victory.

Match Analysis

The final score does not fully reflect how long Arouca remained competitive.

Porto controlled much of the game but had to remain patient. The first half demonstrated Arouca’s capacity to defend their penalty area and frustrate a team with significantly more attacking possession.

The second half was different.

Porto increased the tempo, pushed Arouca progressively deeper and generated a sustained sequence of chances. The hosts finished with 23 attempts compared with four from Arouca, 10 shots on target against one, and an expected goals figure of approximately 3.0 against 0.54.

Veiga’s goal was therefore less an isolated moment than the eventual consequence of mounting pressure.

The second goal also highlighted Porto’s depth.

Sainz entered with less than 15 minutes remaining and provided the decisive contribution that removed any remaining uncertainty from the contest.

Defensive Strength Becoming a Major Feature

Perhaps the most striking feature of Porto’s opening campaign is not simply the nine points.

It is the absence of goals conceded.

The Dragons have started their league season with:

FC Porto 2, 0 FC Alverca

Rio Ave 0, 2 FC Porto

FC Porto 2, 0 FC Arouca

That means six goals scored and zero conceded across the opening three rounds.

The defensive consistency provides Farioli with an increasingly strong platform. Porto have not needed high scoring performances because their opponents have yet to find a way through.

League Impact

The result ended Arouca’s own perfect start.

Vasco Seabra’s side had opened the season impressively with a 1, 0 victory over Vitória SC followed by a 4, 0 demolition of Moreirense, meaning both clubs entered the Dragão having won their opening two matches.

Porto emerged from that early season test with their record intact.

Three games. Three victories. Three clean sheets. Three identical 2, 0 scorelines.

It is an exceptionally controlled beginning to the championship and places the Dragons in a powerful early position as the 2026/27 title race begins to take shape.

Final: FC Porto 2, 0 FC Arouca
