By Open Chronicle Sports

Santa Clara continued their impressive opening to the Liga Portugal Betclic season with a 1, 0 victory over FC Famalicão at the Estádio de São Miguel.

Once again, Gonçalo Paciência was the decisive figure. The Portuguese striker scored in the 22nd minute, producing the only goal of a competitive contest and extending his excellent individual start to the campaign.

The match also carried historical significance, becoming the 21,000th game in the history of Portugal’s top professional league competition.

Paciência Makes the Difference

Santa Clara entered the match having already demonstrated their competitiveness during the opening two rounds, and Gonçalo Paciência had been central to that start.

Against Famalicão, he delivered again.

The decisive breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute, when Paciência found the net to put the Azorean side ahead.

It was another important contribution from a striker who had already scored twice against Nacional on the opening weekend before providing the winning goal against Académico de Viseu on Matchday 2.

Santa Clara therefore had an advantage to protect, while Famalicão needed to find a response.

Famalicão Search for a Way Back

The visitors had opportunities to change the direction of the contest.

Georgios Koutsias threatened in the 19th minute, shortly before Santa Clara opened the scoring, while Sorriso produced another attacking moment for Famalicão in the 28th.

The pattern continued after the interval.

Roméo Beney was involved in another Famalicão opportunity in the 52nd minute, while Óscar Aranda threatened in the 78th as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

Santa Clara nevertheless protected their advantage.

Santa Clara Remain Dangerous

The hosts were not content simply to defend their one goal lead.

Brenner had an opportunity in the 79th minute as Santa Clara looked for the second goal that would have given them greater security heading into the closing stages.

It never arrived, meaning the contest remained open until stoppage time.

Famalicão produced one final threat through Rudi Almeida in the 92nd minute, but Santa Clara held firm to complete the victory.

Match Analysis

Santa Clara’s victory was another demonstration of their ability to turn narrow advantages into points.

The decisive factor was again Paciência. His presence has given the Azorean side a reliable focal point in attack, and his early season scoring run is already having a direct influence on results.

After scoring twice in the 2, 2 opening draw against Nacional, he scored the winner against Académico de Viseu and has now delivered the decisive goal against Famalicão.

Famalicão had enough attacking moments to keep the outcome uncertain, particularly as Santa Clara were unable to find a second goal.

The difference was efficiency.

Santa Clara found the breakthrough and successfully protected it. Famalicão found opportunities but could not turn them into an equaliser.

League Impact

Santa Clara’s start now reads two victories and one draw from their opening three league matches, giving the Azorean club seven points from a possible nine.

It is an excellent opening sequence after the 2, 2 draw against Nacional and consecutive 1, 0 victories against Académico de Viseu and Famalicão.

For Famalicão, the difficult start continues. After drawing 1, 1 at Estoril on the opening weekend and losing 2, 1 at home to Marítimo, the Minho club suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Azores.

For Santa Clara, meanwhile, the combination of defensive resilience and Paciência’s goals is producing one of the strongest starts to the new campaign.

Final: Santa Clara 1, 0 FC Famalicão
