Premier League 2026/27 | Matchweek 2
Manchester United finally have lift off.
Bruno Fernandes scored a hat trick as United swept aside Ipswich Town 5–2 at Old Trafford, securing their first Premier League victory of the season with an attacking performance that offered both relief and encouragement after a difficult opening weekend.
Bryan Mbeumo was also on target, while a Jacob Greaves own goal contributed to a five goal United haul. Ipswich responded through Leif Davis and Chuba Akpom, but neither goal was enough to prevent the afternoon becoming increasingly comfortable for the hosts.
For United, the result was badly needed.
A 2–0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City had ensured the first week of the campaign was dominated by familiar questions. At Old Trafford, United answered some of them emphatically.
Five goals.
Three for the captain.
Three points.
And, perhaps most importantly, a performance capable of changing the mood around the club.
United needed a response
There was already pressure attached to this match.
Opening day defeats are rarely catastrophic, but Manchester United do not operate in an environment where disappointing results disappear quietly.
Losing at Hull ensured scrutiny immediately followed.
Ipswich therefore arrived at Old Trafford facing a team that needed more than simply a better performance.
United needed a result.
From the opening stages, there was greater purpose to their football.
The tempo was higher. The movement in attacking areas was sharper. United looked more determined to move the ball forward rather than allowing possession to become predictable.
At the centre of it all was Fernandes.
The captain did not merely influence the match.
He took control of it.
Bruno takes command
There are afternoons when Fernandes can appear to be playing several positions simultaneously.
He drops deep to collect possession.
He moves between midfield lines.
He arrives around the penalty area.
He creates.
And, when the opportunity presents itself, he scores.
Ipswich experienced the full range.
Fernandes repeatedly found areas from which he could influence United’s attacking play, becoming increasingly difficult for the visitors to contain as the match developed.
His reward was a hat trick.
For a player who has so often carried the creative burden at Old Trafford, three goals represented a particularly emphatic contribution.
This was leadership expressed through football.
United needed their captain.
Their captain delivered.
Mbeumo adds another dimension
The significance of Bryan Mbeumo’s contribution should not be lost amid the attention surrounding Fernandes.
United have needed greater variety in attack.
Mbeumo provides it.
His movement, direct running and ability to operate across different attacking positions gives the side another way of unsettling defensive structures.
Against Ipswich, he added his name to the scoresheet and helped ensure United did not become dependent on a single source of goals.
That matters.
The strongest attacking teams are difficult to contain because stopping one player simply creates opportunities for another.
United have spent too many matches in recent seasons waiting for individual inspiration.
Against Ipswich, the danger came from several directions.
Greaves endures a painful Old Trafford moment
For Ipswich, the afternoon became even more difficult when Jacob Greaves put through his own goal.
Own goals can be particularly cruel because they frequently emerge from precisely the actions defenders are required to make.
Track the runner.
Attack the cross.
Attempt the clearance.
One unfortunate contact can transform defensive responsibility into a goal for the opposition.
Greaves experienced that at Old Trafford.
Against a United side already playing with confidence, the mistake increased Ipswich’s problems and provided the hosts with further control over the contest.
Yet Ipswich did not simply collapse.
They found two goals of their own.
Davis gives Ipswich something to celebrate
Leif Davis provided one of the visitors’ responses.
The full back has long offered attacking quality from the left and once again demonstrated his ability to influence matches further forward.
His goal gave the travelling supporters something to celebrate and briefly offered Ipswich hope that the contest might still change direction.
The problem was what happened at the opposite end.
Ipswich could hurt United.
They could not stop them.
Every attempt to establish a route back into the match was undermined by United’s ability to create another attacking moment.
That is a difficult equation for any visiting team at Old Trafford.
Akpom finds the net, but United remain out of reach
Chuba Akpom also scored for Ipswich.
On another afternoon, two away goals at Manchester United might have provided the foundation for an excellent result.
Not this time.
United had five.
The distinction says much about the character of the match.
Ipswich were capable of creating danger and deserve credit for continuing to attack despite the increasingly difficult scoreline.
But the visitors never found sufficient defensive control.
United repeatedly reached dangerous areas.
Fernandes continually influenced proceedings.
Mbeumo provided another threat.
By the time Akpom added his contribution, the balance of the afternoon had already tilted decisively towards the home side.
Five goals change the conversation
The importance of this victory extends beyond the three points.
Manchester United began the weekend facing questions about their attacking structure and the direction of the new season.
Scoring five changes the conversation.
It does not answer every question.
One emphatic home victory cannot erase the problems exposed at Hull, nor can conclusions about a Premier League campaign be drawn after only two matches.
But confidence matters.
Momentum matters.
Old Trafford feeling optimistic rather than anxious matters.
United needed something capable of generating all three.
Ipswich provided the afternoon on which they found it.
Fernandes remains the reference point
For all the changes around Manchester United, one thing remains remarkably consistent.
Fernandes is still the player they look towards when a match needs direction.
A hat trick will dominate the headlines, but his importance goes beyond the goals themselves.
He establishes tempo.
He demands possession.
He attempts the difficult pass.
He accepts responsibility.
Those characteristics can occasionally lead to frustration when ambitious actions fail.
On afternoons like this, they make him irresistible.
Ipswich never found a convincing method of removing him from the game.
By full time, the consequence was three goals for the Portuguese and the match ball to accompany United’s first league victory.
Ipswich receive a Premier League warning
For Ipswich, there are more difficult lessons.
They returned to the Premier League knowing defensive mistakes would be punished more severely than they were in the Championship.
Old Trafford provided evidence.
United possessed too much quality when Ipswich allowed space around their penalty area.
The five goals conceded will concern them.
There were positives.
Davis scored.
Akpom scored.
Ipswich continued trying to play even as the match moved away from them.
But survival at this level requires more than attacking courage.
There must also be the ability to remain in matches when opponents begin applying sustained pressure.
Against United, Ipswich could not.
Old Trafford has something to celebrate
Perhaps the most important development came in the stands.
Old Trafford needed an afternoon like this.
Supporters arrived hoping for a response after the opening weekend disappointment.
They received considerably more.
Goals arrived.
Fernandes produced a captain’s performance.
Mbeumo contributed.
United attacked with conviction.
The relationship between a team and its stadium can become particularly important when confidence is fragile.
Anxiety travels quickly from the pitch to the stands.
So does belief.
With every United goal, the atmosphere changed.
By the closing stages, the tension surrounding the start of the season had been replaced by celebration.
A beginning, rather than an answer
Manchester United should resist the temptation to interpret this as proof that every problem has disappeared.
It has not.
Ipswich scored twice at Old Trafford, which provides defensive issues to examine before more demanding opponents arrive.
There will be considerably tougher tests.
But seasons are constructed through moments when teams respond to setbacks.
United had lost their opening match.
They returned home under pressure.
They scored five.
That is a response.
For Ipswich, the afternoon offered a reminder of how unforgiving the Premier League can become once an opponent finds momentum.
For Manchester United, it provided something they had been waiting for.
A victory.
For Bruno Fernandes, it provided something else.
The match ball.
United’s season had begun with frustration in Hull.
At Old Trafford, their captain helped start it again.
