FC Porto emerged from Matchday 4 as the only side in Liga Portugal with a perfect record, while Sporting CP maintained the pressure and Benfica and SC Braga continued their pursuit during a round that began to give the championship table a more defined shape.
With all nine fixtures completed, Porto lead the standings with 12 points from four matches. Sporting are two points behind on 10, while the chasing group remains close enough to ensure that the opening phase of the season is far from settled.
Porto remain perfect
FC Porto produced one of the clearest statements of the weekend with a 3,0 away victory over Académico de Viseu.
More important than the margin was the continuation of Porto’s perfect start. Four matches have produced four victories, leaving them alone at the top of the championship.
At this early stage, consistency is already separating Porto from their principal rivals. They have taken every available point and have established the first meaningful advantage of the campaign.
There is still a long way to go, but 12 points from 12 represents exactly the type of start required from a team with championship ambitions.
Sporting respond emphatically
Sporting CP remain Porto’s closest challengers after an impressive 4,0 victory away to Rio Ave.
The champions have collected 10 points from four matches, meaning the only difference between Sporting and perfection is the draw that cost them two points earlier in the campaign.
Their performance at Rio Ave was nevertheless significant. Winning by four goals away from home demonstrated both attacking strength and the capacity to respond to Porto’s early pace.
The first major pattern of the season is therefore becoming visible. Porto have the points advantage, but Sporting remain firmly attached to the leaders.
Benfica keep moving forward
Benfica secured another important victory by defeating Estoril Praia 2,1.
Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring before Clément Lenglet added Benfica’s second. Yanis Begraoui subsequently reduced the deficit for Estoril, forcing Benfica to protect their advantage rather than cruise through the closing stages.
It was not as emphatic as the victories recorded by Porto and Sporting, but the result mattered more than the margin.
For Benfica, the immediate objective is straightforward. They cannot allow Porto’s perfect opening or Sporting’s strong start to create significant separation during the first weeks of the championship.
Matchday 4 therefore represented another necessary step in keeping themselves involved in the developing title race.
Braga take the Minho derby
SC Braga collected three valuable points with a 1,0 victory over Vitória SC, with Diego Rodrigues scoring the decisive goal.
A one goal victory in a derby can carry significance beyond the league table. Braga gained both the points and local supremacy from a fixture traditionally played with considerable intensity.
The result also keeps Braga connected to the leading group and reinforces their potential role in a championship that may not develop exclusively around Portugal’s traditional three major clubs.
For Vitória, meanwhile, losing such a tight contest underlines how small margins can already have an impact on the early standings.
Nacional defeat brings immediate consequences
One of the most dramatic matches of the round came in Madeira, where Estrela Amadora defeated Nacional 3,2.
Five goals made it one of Matchday 4’s most entertaining encounters, but its consequences extended beyond the final whistle.
The defeat was followed by João Gião’s departure from the Nacional coaching position, creating the first significant managerial change of the Liga Portugal season. The Madeira club now enters the next phase of the campaign needing both results and stability from its new technical direction.
For Estrela Amadora, the victory represents an important away success and three potentially valuable points in what could become a highly competitive battle in the lower and middle sections of the table.
Arouca and Moreirense collect valuable wins
Arouca defeated Marítimo 2,1, another result that could prove useful as the early mid table begins to form.
Moreirense also secured maximum points, edging Casa Pia 1,0. These are precisely the fixtures that can shape a club’s season away from the title conversation. Points collected against direct competitors provide early breathing space and can rapidly change the complexion of the standings.
Elsewhere, Alverca and Santa Clara drew 1,1, sharing the points in another closely contested encounter.
No breakthrough for Famalicão or Gil Vicente
The only goalless fixture of the round came between Famalicão and Gil Vicente, who finished 0,0.
While both teams added a point, the absence of a winner meant neither could take full advantage of a round in which several direct competitors collected victories.
It was also a reminder that, despite some high scoring matches elsewhere, Liga Portugal remains a competition in which tactical balance and narrow margins frequently determine results.

Open Chronicle analysis
After four rounds, the most important development is not simply that Porto are first. It is that they have not yet dropped a point.
A two point advantage over Sporting is modest, but maintaining a perfect record creates pressure on every challenger. Sporting have responded extremely well and remain within one victory of changing the leadership situation.
Behind them, Benfica and Braga remain relevant to the developing championship picture. Neither can afford many dropped points while Porto continue at this pace, but Matchday 4 ensured that both remain in pursuit.
There is also an emerging second story beneath the title race. Clubs such as Arouca, Moreirense and Estrela Amadora are already collecting points that could become important when the middle of the table begins to separate.
At the opposite end, Nacional’s situation deserves particular attention. A 3,2 home defeat followed by a coaching departure introduces uncertainty only four matches into the season.
The league therefore enters its next round with its first clear reference point: FC Porto are the team everyone else is chasing.
Four victories from four have given Porto control of the early championship. Sporting remain close enough to make that advantage fragile, while Benfica and Braga know that the leaders cannot be allowed to build significant daylight.
Matchday 4 did not decide anything, but it gave the 2026/27 Liga Portugal season its first recognisable hierarchy.
