Toyota star triumphs in the season opener as WRC ushers in a new era

Monte-Carlo, January 27, 2025 – Sébastien Ogier has once again cemented his legacy in the World Rally Championship (WRC) by securing a record-extending 10th victory at the Rallye Monte-Carlo. The French rally ace, driving for Toyota Gazoo Racing, delivered a masterful performance in the season opener, holding off teammate Elfyn Evans by 18.4 seconds in a thrilling finale.

Ogier, an eight-time world champion, maintained control throughout the event, despite challenging weather conditions that saw a mix of dry asphalt, ice, and snow. His triumph was particularly emotional, as he dedicated the win to his late uncle. “What a weekend! This victory is for my uncle, who passed away last year. I think my lucky star followed me to the end,” Ogier said after crossing the finish line.

Toyota Dominates, Fourmaux Shines for Hyundai

Toyota celebrated a dominant 1-2 finish, with Elfyn Evans securing second place. The Welsh driver put up a strong fight but couldn’t match Ogier’s consistency. Meanwhile, Adrien Fourmaux, making his debut for Hyundai’s factory team, stunned the rally world by claiming third place. The Frenchman engaged in a tight battle with Evans until the final stage but ultimately finished 3.5 seconds behind the Toyota driver.

Unpredictable Conditions Claim Victims

The treacherous Monte-Carlo conditions led to several dramatic moments. Kalle Rovanperä, making his full-time return to WRC, snatched fourth place from Hyundai’s Ott Tänak in the final stages. Tänak had looked strong after dominating Saturday’s afternoon loop but struggled with tire choices on the final day.

Defending champion Thierry Neuville endured a frustrating rally, finishing sixth after multiple setbacks, including a suspension issue, a puncture, and a costly mistake that resulted in a €10,000 fine. Meanwhile, young Irish driver Josh McErlean impressed in his Rally1 debut, securing seventh place in an M-Sport Ford Puma.

Rossel Triumphs in WRC2, Monte Legend Continues

In the WRC2 category, Frenchman Yohan Rossel claimed victory in a Citroën C3, ahead of Eric Camilli and Léo Rossel. The Monte-Carlo Rally also saw a strong performance from young talents, including Grégoire Munster, who won his first WRC stage before retiring due to a crash.

As the dust settles in Monaco, the WRC season now shifts focus to the icy roads of Sweden for the next round, scheduled from February 13 to 16. With Ogier’s sensational performance setting the tone, the 2025 season promises to be one of the most thrilling in recent memory.
