WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump declared a public safety emergency in the nation’s capital today, announcing the launch of a large-scale federal and military-supported initiative to restore order, reduce crime, and improve the city’s image. Speaking from the White House, Trump vowed to make Washington, D.C., “one of the safest, cleanest, and most beautiful cities anywhere in the world,” pledging swift action to protect both residents and visitors.
Central to the effort is the mobilization of the D.C. National Guard, which will deploy in force across the city in the coming week. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that approximately 800 soldiers have been activated under the newly formed D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, with between 100 and 200 directly supporting law enforcement in administrative, logistical, and street-level operations.
“They love to spit in the face of the police as the police are standing up there in uniform… I said, ‘You tell them: you spit, and we hit.’ And they can hit real hard.”@realDonaldTrump says the National Guard is deploying to Democrat-run D.C. over rising violent crime —… pic.twitter.com/AsK94jeMgl

“These Guard members will stand shoulder to shoulder with D.C. police and federal officers,” Hegseth said. “They will be strong, they will be tough, and they will be ready to restore order.” The mission will be coordinated by Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, with the potential for additional Guard units and specialized teams to join the operation if needed.
Hegseth drew parallels to previous National Guard deployments, including border security missions alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, as well as assignments in Los Angeles to safeguard federal officers. “We have their back,” Hegseth told Guard members, echoing the president’s message of support.
The White House cited a series of violent incidents as driving factors behind the emergency declaration, including the May murders of two embassy staffers, the June shooting death of a congressional intern near the White House, and the August 3 beating of a federal employee by a mob. Statistics provided in an executive order reveal troubling crime levels: in 2024, Washington recorded a murder rate of 27.54 per 100,000 residents and a vehicle theft rate of 842.4 per 100,000 residents.
“It’s becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness,” Trump said. “Caravans of youth rampage through the streets on ATVs and motorbikes at all hours. Entire neighborhoods are now under emergency curfews. That is going to change — and change quickly.”
Beyond reducing violent crime, the administration’s plan includes cleaning up the city’s streets and repairing infrastructure. Trump singled out the removal of trash, graffiti, and the restoration of damaged marble panels as part of a broader goal to return Washington to its historic grandeur.
“We’re going to restore the city back to the gleaming capital that everybody wants it to be,” Trump said. “It’s going to be something very special.”
The Safe and Beautiful Task Force will begin operations within days, marking one of the largest National Guard law enforcement support missions in the capital since the 2020 civil unrest.
