Ukraine has accepted the core framework of a United States peace proposal aimed at ending the war that has lasted nearly four years, according to multiple senior officials speaking to American and European media. Although the essential elements of the plan have received Kyiv’s approval, several delicate points remain unresolved, and both sides acknowledge that further diplomatic work is required.
CBS News reported that a senior US official confirmed Ukraine’s agreement to the peace proposal’s substance. The source noted that a handful of remaining issues must be refined before the deal can be finalized. Reuters likewise stated that Ukraine supported the central terms of the proposal following discussions in Geneva between American and Ukrainian delegations.
A Ukrainian official told the agency that President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to address some of the most sensitive outstanding questions directly.
White House Stresses Progress, Cautions That Challenges Remain
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the past week saw considerable progress in bringing both Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. She noted that a small number of delicate yet manageable questions still require resolution, adding that these issues will demand further talks among Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow.
Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said he is optimistic that Zelenskyy may travel to Washington before the end of the month to complete the final steps of the agreement. The Ukrainian president noted that the Coalition of the Willing will meet by videoconference, cochaired by Germany, to assess current developments. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are expected to join the meeting.
Despite progress, Zelenskyy emphasized that considerable work remains. He pointed to the Geneva meetings as a source of renewed momentum, saying they revealed solid prospects for turning the path toward peace into a reality.
International Reactions Highlight Complex Road Ahead
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the developments by stating that Ukraine’s acceptance does not represent a new agreement, but rather confirmation that Kyiv is satisfied with the document presented in Geneva. He noted that the plan does not address territorial questions and stressed that the road to peace will be long and challenging.
Even so, Starmer expressed determination to support the peace process and advance diplomatic efforts.
