The Westpac NSW Blues Women have written a new chapter in State of Origin history after being named the NSW Champions of Sport Team of the Year at the 2025 NSW Sports Awards. The ceremony took place at The Star Event Centre in Sydney and marked a milestone achievement for both the team and the wider NSW Rugby League community.
Coach John Strange and seasoned forward Kezie Apps accepted the honour on behalf of the squad. Their 2025 campaign saw the Blues reclaim the Ampol State of Origin Shield in a hard-fought 2-1 series victory, with crucial wins at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and Allianz Stadium in Sydney. The triumph showcased the resilience and growing strength of the women’s program, which has continued to elevate the profile of the sport across the state.
This award is especially significant because it is the first time in the award’s three-decade history that any NSW Blues team, men or women, has received the honour. The recognition positions the team among an elite group of Rugby League sides who have previously won, including the Penrith Panthers, St George Illawarra Dragons, Wests Tigers, Sydney Roosters, and Newcastle Knights.
The evening also celebrated the induction of True Blue Ricky Stuart AM into the NSW Hall of Champions. Stuart’s legacy spans decades as both a player and coach, and his contribution to Rugby League in New South Wales was warmly acknowledged during the ceremony.
The NSWRL extended its congratulations to the Westpac NSW Blues Women for their groundbreaking success, noting the pride they bring to the sport. The organisation also honoured Ricky Stuart for his outstanding service and his lasting impact on Rugby League in the state.
