Law enforcement officials are investigating a potential connection between two high-profile violent crimes that have rocked elite New England academic communities: the mass shooting at Brown University and the targeted murder of a prominent MIT professor.
While the FBI initially stated earlier this week that there was no known connection, senior law enforcement officials have now confirmed that they are examining the possibility that the two incidents, occurring just 50 miles apart, are linked.
The Crimes
1. Brown University (Providence, RI)
On Saturday at approximately 4:00 p.m., a gunman opened fire inside the Barus & Holley engineering building during final exams. Two people were killed, and nine others were wounded.
- Deceased Victims: Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook.
- The Suspect: Surveillance footage shows a man in a dark jacket, mask, and hat walking on campus hours before the shooting. He remains at large.
2. MIT Professor Murder (Brookline, MA)
On Monday, Nuno Loureiro, a professor of nuclear science and engineering at MIT, was shot multiple times inside his home on Gibbs Street in Brookline.
- The Victim: Loureiro directed the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT and had been a member of the faculty since 2016.
- The Suspect: No suspect has been identified in this case, and authorities are actively searching for leads.
Adding to the complexity of the case, reports indicate that authorities have located an abandoned “vehicle of interest” in New Hampshire. This discovery reportedly contributed to the delay of a scheduled press conference on Friday evening as investigators worked to process new details.
On Tuesday, FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks told reporters that there seemed to be “no connection” between the incidents. However, the emergence of “senior law enforcement” confirmation of a probe suggests that evidence, either ballistic, digital, or related to the vehicle, may have surfaced, warranting a closer look at a shared motive or perpetrator.
Both MIT and Brown University are within the same regional corridor, and both victims at Brown and Professor Loureiro were connected to high-level engineering and science departments.
