LONDON — Immigration enforcement in the United Kingdom has reached its highest level in history, as the Home Office reports a massive nationwide crackdown on illegal working. New figures reveal that more than 17,400 raids were carried out between July 2024 and December 2025, a staggering 77 per cent increase over the previous period, marking an unprecedented escalation in border and internal security.
The surge in activity, backed by a £5 million funding boost, has resulted in over 12,300 arrests, as teams target “vulnerable” sectors including car washes, nail bars, and restaurants.
The Home Office’s latest data dump paints a picture of a “relentless” effort to dismantle the black economy. Nationwide arrests for suspected illegal working have spiked by 83 per cent, with government officials attributing the success to expanded intelligence-sharing and increased manpower.

While London remains a primary hub, the crackdown has hit Scotland with particular force. In 2025 alone, immigration teams carried out 695 raids north of the border, leading to 400 arrests. This represents a 61 per cent rise in enforcement visits compared to 2024.
High-profile operations in Scotland have ranged from rural takeaways to industrial hubs:
-
Dingwall: Two Chinese nationals were arrested in April at a local takeaway.
-
Newton Stewart: A restaurant raid in October led to three arrests and the seizure of 1,600 illicit cigarettes.
-
Kilwinning: A major December operation at an industrial site saw ten Pakistani nationals arrested, with nine currently held pending removal.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has framed the record-breaking numbers as a moral and economic imperative. “There is no place for illegal working in our communities,” she said. “We have surged enforcement activity to the highest level in British history, so illegal migrants in the black economy have nowhere to hide.”
The Home Office also announced that all enforcement teams are now equipped with body-worn video cameras to enhance evidence gathering and support prosecution outcomes. The technology, rolled out in September, is intended to curb aggressive resistance during raids and provide a “transparent record” of the operations.
The government is not stopping at physical raids. Ministers confirmed that forthcoming legislation will significantly expand “Right-to-Work” checks to include the gig economy, casual labor, and subcontractors.
By the end of this Parliament, the government plans to introduce mandatory digital identification to verify employment eligibility, effectively automating the detection of illegal labor in real-time. This move is intended to eliminate the “shadow workforce” that ministers claim undercuts honest businesses and drains the public purse.

As the Home Office looks toward the remainder of 2026, the strategy is clear: high-visibility raids combined with new digital surveillance tools. For business owners, the message is equally stark—those failing to comply with the new digital ID and right-to-work laws will face “the full consequences” of the law.
