EDINBURGH — Friday, January 16, 2026 — The streets of the Scottish capital are bracing for a human tide next summer. Organizers have revealed that the start of the 2027 Tour de France could attract up to one million spectators to Edinburgh alone, marking what is being described as a “historic first” for the nation.
A Million on the Mile
Paul Bush, the Managing Director for the Grand Départ GB, predicts that the Scottish capital will see crowds far exceeding those of the 2023 Glasgow World Championships. While Glasgow saw nearly 500,000 fans for the road races, the allure of the Tour, the third-largest sporting event in the world, is expected to double that figure in Edinburgh.
“It’s one of those bucket-list events, and it is free,” Bush told BBC Radio Scotland. “In an age where sporting events are criticized for ticket costs, we are offering something really special.”

The Route: From the Capital to the Border
The opening stage, scheduled for July 2, 2027, will see the peloton depart from Edinburgh and race toward Carlisle. The route is designed to showcase the scenic beauty of the Scottish Borders, passing through:
-
Galashiels
-
Melrose
-
Selkirk
-
Hawick
Experts describe this first stage as “quite flat,” suggesting it will culminate in a high-speed battle for the sprinters. Subsequent stages from Keswick to Liverpool and eventually into Wales are expected to provide a much tougher test for the climbers.
The 15-Million-Person Party
The 2027 event is not just about the men’s race. For the first time, the Tour de France Femmes avec Swift will also stage parts of its contest in England. Combined, the two events are tipped to bring between 10 and 15 million people onto the streets across the UK.
“It brings some joy back into life,” Bush remarked, envisioning street parties and community celebrations along every kilometer of the thousand-mile journey.
